Hi. I want to buy a 1984 bronco...but they dont have airrbags..but they look to be built like a tank. Anybody know how safe they are? I dont want the 1996 because its illegal to remove the top...

I'm sure no expert on vehicle safety, but I would not hesitate to drive an '84 Bronco without air bags. I think the older the vehicle, the safer it is, as the older ones were built with more steel and less plastic. I would, however, request that you ALWAYS fasten your seat belt!
Frankly, I'm scared to death of air bags! I've been driving for over 40 years and have been involved in a few accidents -- always I've been rear ended. I've never had a situation where the air bag went off. But in the past 10-12 years that I've had a vehicle with an air bag, I've been scared to death that it would just go off while I was driving!
Also, I have witnessed a few accidents where air bags deployed and in every case, the folks were injured by the airbags -- broken noses, other facial injuries, chest injuries -- and my impression was that the injuries from the air bags were worse than they would have sustained without the air bags. However, none of these were high speed, head on collisions. I think that is the situation where the air bag is a life-saver.
Bottom line, enjoy your older Bronco sans top, but DO fasten your seat belt. The seat belt is really a life-saver! |

Most of the world grew up without airbags. There is no crash test info available on MSN. As long as your not racing around & rolling it you should be fine. My car has airbags & I got hit pretty good the other day & it didn't go off. SO that doesn't mean you'd be any safer with them. Why is it illegal to remove the top on a '96? There are convertible cars everywhere, that doesn't make sense to me. |

They are pretty safe overall because of their size just remember to wear your seat-belts and I found that their safety ratings are close to the pickup trucks of that year..... |
