Is it time for zero tolerance and should all cars be fitted with devices that record evidence for prosecutions in view that traffic police are often not present on our roads. Additional Details Was a paramedic for 35yrs now retired but see that driving standards have taken a nose dive.

It makes me laugh when people say 'leave drivers alone and go after the real criminals', far more people die due to idiots on the road than burgalary, knife crime and murder every year.
If people adhered to speed limits and drove safely (everyone thinks an accident will never happen to them) then the police could divert resources to other areas and not have to waste time and money on some tw@t late for a meeting doing 100 miles down the motorway and causing a pile up.
Its really not that difficult to work out now is it?

Im not defending bad driving but the roads deaths have been going down every year not up, so things are getting better.
i think there should be more training for drivers, and we should be retested every 5 years? |

Carry On..!

You'd never get that through the Commons. Personally I think anyone caught DUI should have a ban, and should be checked on by community officers, if they are caught driving during the ban, seize their car or jail them. Drastic but why should we all pay higher insurance costs, and possibly serious or fatal injury because of a selfish few. |

I think it is so daft that you can get away with so much before any real punishment starts.
6 points in the first two years for God's sake - that means you can get done for speeding twice before you have your licence revoked! I agree that there should be a zero tolerance for the first two years. As far as after that, I think it would be fair to say that after that it should be a once chance and then after that licence revoked. Letting people accumulate 12 points is ludicrous!
Regarding devices, the technology is there - like tacho's in coaches lorries - what needs to happen is the police need to have less d*cking about to do so they can get down and do their jobs properly without stupid procedures to constantly go through.
Another thing that frustrates me is when a banned driver gets caught driving again, they get....wait for it.....banned for a few years longer!!! How ridiculous is that? If they were driving whilst already banned - how is banning them for longer going to stop them!
I think that continuous driving education ongoing throughout a driver's career or a regular retest/assessment system would help also :) |

yes it is time for zero tolerance and the law should be toughened up on bad drivers, even now every time i am out i see someone using there mobile phone while driving they are just ignorant of the law, while out this morning i was travelling at 30mph and a woman was about 2 metres behind me drinking a bottle of water and she had a small child in her car in an emergency she had no chance |

well the cars are getting stronger and stronger and people are driving more and more recklessly.
tough measures should be taken, from strict drunk driving monitoring, to drug testing by the police.
france has applied new tougher policies to monitor speed and alcohol and traffic violations and it has proven effective. radars at key points.
maximum sentencing for violators, license suspension, impounding of the vehicles.
once again communication has to be effective regarding drinking and driving, the use of drugs should be more severely punished in order to reduce usage.
i agree with you on all the points quoted above but it seems carmakers and alcohol brands communicate more effectively than the traffic police. |

Its the same old story with this country of ours, there really is not enough of a deterrent, and i dont just mean bad drivers but all sorts of crime. It seems that the dogooders have gotten their way for far to long and we are all now paying the price. Right thats it i'm on one now! Who allowed cars to be driven on our roads fitted with the loudest stereos, exhausts, blacked out windows, race prepped engines etc etc....and to be wakened at all hrs of the morning!!
No seriously, you couldn't do that sort of thing in my day, who allowed this to happen...did some one suddenly say ' hey you can do that now '! Jeez! Cant i wait to move from this country, Great Britain??? Yeah many years ago maybe but not now. Whats great about it? |

zero tolerance??? if you speed,drink/drug drive you get nicked very simple. that is how it works now.
if your going to post this sort of thing show your sources for the figures, you have said all the above are factors in 3000 deaths, so what are the other factors?
what do you propose to do with all the drivers that you think will be prosecuted from black box information?
put them in more new built prisons, get real, a black box style recorder is not going to stop people who want to speed, drive a vehicle in a dangerous manner or under the influence.
have you even thought about how long this would take to implement?
while i was searching i found this

and this

so which is it, lowest casualty rate for a few years or some MP stiring up a bit of trouble. |
