A Right - of - Way question?

You want to turn right at an intersection. There are people in the opposite direction turning left on an unprotected green light, so your light is green too. Who waits for who?
When I'm turning right I always wait for the left turners (when my light is green)...but my friend keeps telling me that I have the right of way. Which is it??

If there is only one lane to turn into, the vehicle turning right has the right-of-way since as the two vehicles approach it is on the right.
If there are two lanes to turn into, each driver must turn into the closest lane and there is no conflict if they do so neither needs to yield. If either is turning into the WRONG lane, they must yield. |

You have the right of way and by waiting for them you're holding up traffic behind you. |

You have the right of way because left turners must yield the right of way to oncoming traffic such as you. But never *force* your right of way! If it looks like they're not going to yield, then chances are good they will not and you could collide, assuming you're driving in the USA. Sure, it would be their fault, if you live long enough to go to court. |

Right turning vehicle always have the right-of-way if the light is green(solid) on both sides but keep in mind that right-of-way is always to be "given" and not "taken". Waiting for the occasional "%$#@#$" that refused to yeild is still better that being in and accident and having your car hit. (I drive a classic and use this rule of thumb for my own protection) |

You would have the right away |

The right turn has the right of way against a car turning left in front of them. |

You have the right of way. If the other driver is already turning go ahead and yield the right of way. If the other vehicle is not turning continue to make your turn. If you stop or slow down suddenly you could be rear-ended by a vehicle behind you, they are expecting you to make the turn before the approaching driver does. Please read your states driver handbook. |
