What will happen if, while driving your car at a speed of 100 KM/hour suddenly without slowing down or stopping you shift the gear to the reverse position?

Depends.
On newer cars the transmission will not shift into reverse when at such a high speed, even when in the R selection. The computer will tell the tranny to stay in drive/neutral.
As stupid as it sounds i have done this at 60mph/100kph. i had my hand on my automatic shifter. A bee (i am allergic too bees) landed on my hand, i freaked out and next thing my car was in reverse.
My car, '98 Pontiac sunfire, made a clunk sound and jolted the car. Put it back in drive, i thought the car shut off cause when i hit the gas nothing would happen, but when i coasted to a stop my engine was still idling but at like 400rpms, i would tap the gas and the car would shutter. I shut the car off and started it back up, it hesitated at first but started. I continued to drive cautiously for the next 50 miles ' i was going snowboarding'. To this day still no problems from the incident, still runs like before. I guess i cant call my car a piece of shhitt anymore.lol |

The gear box will breakdown. There is a chance that parts of the Engine like timing mechanism, cam and valve mechanism will also be severely damaged....don't even dream of trying it out....

Nothing, the tranny will not shift into reverse untill you slow down to about 5mph, unless you have a stick and then I don't think it will go into reverse. |

While it is not completely impossible to shift in reverse while traveling forward it is not recommended. The Syncho rings in side the transmission are designed to allow the driver to change gears while driving down the road, however the Syncho for the reverse gear is designed to prevent a driver from shifting while the car is moving forward. Now what would happen? I have seen horrible things ranging from engines and transmissions completely blowing apart, to broken axels, and twisted drive shafts. The noise and sounds are horrible and you know the cost is going to be extreme. |

Well I think it would be very dangerous and ruin the trans mission at the very least. I do not know for sure I can not think of a reason why I would ever do that. |

2. Many cars will not do anything because the transmission internally will not allow this.
3. Either way I still would not recommend this. |
