I always drop back at least 5 or 6 car lengths before pulling out to pass, for a couple of reasons:
1- it allows the driver in front the opportunity to see your signal and your intention to pass
2- it gives you adequate room to see the road ahead for oncoming traffic
When pulling back in, you should try to get about 8-10 car lengths ahead before pulling in, because:
1- if there is water/snow/slush/sand on the road, you won't completely cover the passed vehicle's windshield
2- it gives the other vehicle room to respond without jamming on their brakes - if you pull in too soon, the tendency is to spike the brakes to avoid a rear end collision (bythe other driver)
A rule of thumb that I use is to wait until you can see the entire front of the passed car in your center mirror, unless they give you the signal (flashing high beams a couple times) to let you know it's safe. The inly exception to this is if a vehicle is coming toward you, then you need to get in your own lane as quickly as possible. |

Safety first as always. It is difficult to follow an exacting measure for this but usually three car lengths is good. That of course depends on the speed you are traveling. If you are passing someone going 45 and you are doing 60 well.....
I usually do not get back into right lane until I can see the entire, complete vehicle in my rear view mirror after passing them. |
