Advice needed on driving please?

this is the scenario..youre driving up a street ,at the end there is a dual carriage way? you can only turn left at this particular junction on this part of the carriageway stretch? right are you still with me? is it legal to do a 3 point turn at the end of this road,to obviously go back the way you came, without actually putting not even a inch of bumper into the carriageway? i hope im explaining this right ,for you all? it was late at night and we did it,just as the boys in blue came? they gave us a rollicing, which i found unjust as i thought you could do a turn anywhere, unless signposted not to do so,which this incident wasnt?

my argument is,if there are no signs, no limitations, and dont get me wrong ,commonsense prevails, but this was 12.30 at night,so what im trying to say ,is where in the highway code ,unless specified, does it say you cant perform a u-turn as such? please enlighten me?

ok i can see were you are comen from on this, i think the police are in the right to tell you off for that at the end of the road i will try to explane it for you right here it gos if you think about it when you are doen the 3 point turn you are blocking the road so with doen so the cars which are leaveing the dual carriage way (turnen in the road were you are doen the 3 point turn) they could run in to you because proberly from the dual carriage way they might not have a clear view of the road what they are turnen in to anyway if i was you i just take it as a slap an the rist and try not to do it again otry not to get caught if you think of it in a other way you have the boy racers and idiots drivers and drink drivers driven around at that time of nite so its proberly the copper was thinken of your safety

They told you off as you aren't supposed to do a 3 point turn near the end of a road or across a junction as it's it could be of danger to other road users.

Think of what speed people will be doing turning onto that road off the main road. Higher than on urban roads, and then, there's a car across the middle of the road. Car turning into road at higher speed + car across road = crunch! That's why you got the telling off, I expect. It should also be noted that late at night, your lights would be pointing into bushes back and front, so you'd be virtually invisible. Even with no signposts or road markings, it just takes a little thought for the safety of yourselves and other road users. They do things for a reason, the traffic police. Next time, just take a moment to think of all the possibilities there are to actions. Nothing happened this time, but you, and others, might have been hurt or worse.

If I understand correctly, the dual carriageway, one-way-only issue is irrelevant - you didn't go onto the dual carriageway. The bit you got wrong was to perform the 3-point-turn at a junction. Somebody could turn off the dual-carriageway, into the road you were turning in, and hit you while you were across the road. You would be at fault for not giving due care and attention.

It would have been better to reverse away from the junction and then do the turn.

Well, I wasn't there, so I don't know exactly what they said, but the way you've described it I'd say you were OK. 3-point turns aren't illegal, otherwise everyone would be breaking the law on their driving test.

The only thing I can think of is if the exit from the dual carriageway (the one coming towards you) might've been a modern fast one, meaning that fast exiting traffic would have been suddenly confronted with the side of your car as you were turning.

But, like I said, I wasn't there.

doubt if a 3 point turn anywhere up that road would be legal...
in all intense and purposes.. you are reversing on a main road, even if it wasnt the dually bit..

sorry!
PS.. they have your safety in mind after all, but seems a tad jobsworth all the same!
good old UK policing!

Why is it unjust to give you an earful about carrying out the manoeuvre in a dangerous place? You should know, if you're a qualified driver, that you don't do that in or near a junction!

I got a warning ticket from a cop that saw me do a u-turn. There was no sign saying you couldn't. He told me it was only legal to do it if there was a sign showing you that you COULD.
