All season or snow tires?

The difference is that snow tires offer a greater amount of traction only in the snow. Snow tires give you better grip and they decrease the amount of instability that is caused by icy and snow conditions. Overall season tires are designed for all year around conditions. They help as well but they are designed for the winter, summer, fall, spring. The good thing about having all season tires is that you do not have to change them just for the season. In the summer the tires expand.

Snow tires have as mush as 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires in both handling and traction.....

I haven't purchased snow tires since all season tires became available. I live in NE Ohio and we get those dreaded lake effect storms. FWD and haven't been stuck yet.

Snow tires are great when there is snow but when the roads are dry you will destroy them very quickly. Unless you live in an area that has snow on the roads all winter long i would recommend that you get all season tires.

if you get snow tires try to drive on dry pavement as little as possible. the compound isn't the same and they wear MUCH quicker.

they will also probably last you a few winters- now consider that 100 buck a pop pricetag it evens out to about $30/tire/winter. dont know where you live but winters usually last december to february or so. so thats $10/tire/winter month. (ignoring the price for mounting or a spare set of wheels). thats definitely worth it to me. using winter tires will also make your summers or all-seasons last longer.

Well it really depends where you live in SW Ontario. I live in SW ON as well. I was living in Windsor, coming from there we barely knew what snow was. If you move east from there to the London-Woodstock area, most people have snowtires as it's the snowbelt. East of that in the Niagara Region it might be worth it again. If you are in the GTA. Probably not needed, unless you are north of the GTA and do a lot of driving. For the most part, in SW ON, all season is sufficient. I now live in Markham and will be keeping all season tires on, though many of my co-workers choose to use winter tires in the winter, and other tires in the summer.

Life is good

I just switched over from all-season tires to winter tires on all four wheels. I drive a front wheel drive car that gets a bit tail happy so I thought it best to put snows on the rear as well.
I have not done this on a FWD car before so this winter will be a learning experience.
In Southern areas that don't get much snow a good set of all-season tires should be fine. Snow tires wear too quickly in these areas anyway.
In the Northern States and Canada snow tires are almost a prerequisite. I would not drive without them. In the Province of Quebec the Government has mandated that all cars must have snow tires this winter. I believe that some Northeastern States also require proper snow tires for winter travel.
