I pulled to the middle of the intersection to turn left when the arrow was green. By the time it was safe to turn, the arrow had turned red due to a car coming in my direction running the yellow. I completed my turn and then I was pulled over and given a ticket for running a red light. This happened in Jackson, MS. Am I at fault here?

This is a common dilemma with left turns - where to wait to make the turn. If I wait behind the limit line and the light changes, I still have to wait for opposing traffic to clear. Then if I jump, I can be cited for red light running. If I wait out in the intersection, I am partially blocking cross traffic. But, I would have the right-of-way since I am already in the intersection. If an opposing vehicle approaches the intersection, I cannot assume that it will stop for the red light. Seems like you picked the best option for the conditions. Here's what the book says - (see item (4)(a)

Its going to depend on your local traffic laws. In most places what you did was illegal but most cops wont bother to ticket you for it. |
