I remember as a kid my parents carrying the loaded clip in the trunk and the gun unloaded under the seat. I know you can get a concealed weapon license, but aside from that, on a long road trip, what is legal to carry where for a handgun?

We travel with guns often and here is how we do it: guns in cases (or wrapped in a blanket) in the cargo area farthest away from the driver. Ammo for all guns in a sealed container (like backpack with other stuff or suitcase with outher stuff). Empty clips in the glovebox. And if an officer approaches the car, for any reason, the first thing out of your mouth is that you have unloaded weapons in their cases in the cargo area of the vehicle and the empty clip is in the glovebox. Keep your hands on the steering wheel and he will usually not care because you have announced the presence of firearms, or he will request you to give him the empty clip. Don't worry he will give it back.
We have never had a problem using this method. |

Truly, this is something you should be asking your law enforcement. I know some states do not allow a concealed weapon. You also need to know what the ramifications are if by chance you have a need to use it. And ask yourself, could you use it, at the time. |

The laws vary by state. Be very careful. For example don't ever tell a New York policeman you have a gun. Research the link carefully. |

as far as I can recall, you have to have it away from the cabin area of the car and unloaded. I think the answer above is very complete and sounds like good advice. |

In TX , if you are crossing three counties without a CCP, the clip must be locked separately from the gun. We all comply. |

Um, I think if you don't have a concealed weapon permit, it HAS to be put in the trunk or some other place unloaded, torn down as far as possible. It had better not be openly displayed as someone has suggested. |
