Are All Season Tires acceptable as Snow tires when going thru the mountains?

The tires are Traction A and Temperature B, I need to drive where chains are required but I need to know can I drive my car with those tires with out chains??

I have never driven my car in Winter on All Season tires. I always install a good set of Winter tires. For that past few years that means Snow tires in all four wheels. The difference in heavy snow has been phenomenal.

No matter how good an All Season tire is it will pack up with snow and be virtually useless in the heavy stuff whereas the tread on a proper Snow tire is designed to clear itself of snow and slush.

When I travel I have to use airport rental cars and in most locales they do not mount Snow tires. And I hate them. They do not offer the traction required for safe Winter driving. And I would not dream of going into the mountains without a set of proper Winter tires.

Normally, I'd say yes. However, if you are in an area that you have a long winter and a lot of snow, I'd go with something like a Bridgestone Blizzak.

depends on your state. IN Nevada they post warnings that you must have chains or a 4wd. So I would just check with the local authorities.

You may not be able to pass.

No............

Winter tires have special rubber compounds designed to improve traction, handling and braking in all cold weather conditions, not just ice and snow.

Winter Tires are designed to deliver safety and control in snow, ice, and cold weather conditions.

Many people think that all-season tires can deliver this same performance, but this is not true.

The superior traction that winter tires deliver, as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase over all-season tires, can very well be the margin you need to stop in time or turn to avoid trouble.

"Chains required" is something they make tractor trailers do, not cars. A good all-season will do nearly as well in snow as a dedicated snow tire. Snow tires make more sense for people who use high performance tires in the summer. If you're going to drive thousands of miles in the snow, snow tires might make sense. If you're just going to be up there for a trip here and there, don't bother. Once there's a lot of snow you won't be able to drive unless you have a vehicle with a serious off-road package anyways.
