Are bird accidents rare for aeroplanes?

Iike the Hudson accident that was caused through birds flying into the engine, which resulted in double engine failure. Is this rare and how do plane keep birds away from the engines?

A bird strike (sometimes bird strike, bird hit, or BASH - Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard) is a collision between an airborne animal (usually a bird or bat and a man-made vehicle, especially aircraft. It is a common threat to aircraft safety, and has caused a number of fatal accidents. Fatalities for civil aircraft are quite low and it has been estimated that there has been only 1 fatal accident to a jetliner in one billion (109) flying hours. The majority of bird strikes (65%) cause little damage to the aircraft. Most accidents occur when the bird hits the windscreen or is ingested into the engines. These cause annual damages that have been estimated at $400 million in the United States of America alone to $1.2 billion worldwide to commercial aircraft.

January 15, 2009 · Bird strikes to aircraft are surprisingly common. The FAA reports that between 1990 and 2004 more than 56,000 bird strikes to civil aircraft were recorded. And the FAA estimates that these make up only about 20 percent of the number that actually occurred.

Every year, bird and other wildlife strikes to aircraft cause over $600 million in damage to U.S. civil and military aircraft. When a bird strikes an engine, it can damage parts of the mechanisms, like the fan, that make it spin.

No, it is actually quite common during certain times of year.

However, what normally happens is that the bird get out of the way!

Or at the very most, just a couple of birds hit one engine and get blitzed without causing any damage.

What happened with the Hudsen crash was that a whole flock of birds got hit by both engines! The chances of that happening are next to none.

No, it happens more than you think.

Bird accidents are really quite common, but rarely dangerous to the extent of the Hudson incident. Birds are a continuing problem around airports.

In Canada last year there were 4,000 recorded/reported bird strikes and we have 1/10 of the number of aircraft flying that the USA does.

They test jet engines by throwing dead birds into them. So they are designed to withstand a bird hit. They aren't that common, but they do happen. But the chances of it bringing down your plane are slim.

Ahh it happens on occasion but mainly during and shortly after take off.
