No statistically over 70's are most likely to cause a crash per mile driven. Driving is a evolving technology and as such all drivers should be subject to a refresher course every tens years.
Imagine what it would be like if GP's had to do no further training after qualifying, half of them would still be using leeches |

In Brazil you have to undergo a psychological exam as part of your driving test. I believe that if we were to make the whole practice of driving more realistic it would reduce the number of accidents. We are treating violators like they didn't do anything wrong. We're handing out speeding violations like crazy but don't do anything to show the violators that the speed limit has a purpose and we don't change the speed limit when we can because the local county wants to make a buck or two.
In cities we let people run red lights, routinely let pedestrians know they have no rights whatsoever in a cross walk, etc etc, so yes, we have a little work to do.
The focus right now is on getting people into the hospitals so that we can let insurance companies, doctors and related folk make some money. The police are letting drivers get away with just about anything. I once reported a crazy, reckless driver to the local highway patrol. The response I got? Did you have to speed in order to get his license plate? They never did anything to catch this guy. The whole system is broke, a stricter driving test isn't go to do much good at this point. |

Not necessarily. Driving takes practice, and new drivers sometimes make mistakes. I accidents will happen regardless. |

what u talkin' bout?

No, I don't think so. There is nothing wrong with the test, it is when you get out there; hands on experience. It takes a long time to fully gain the confidence and knowledge that a person needs to survive out there on the road! |

I would tend to think so. A better driving test could, in theory, prevent unsafe drivers from getting on the road... like that 16 year old who hit me head on and "totally didn't see me, man" |

No that is not working they need to raise the age to 21. |

I think that is the only answer.
I think the test at the moment is too easy. I live in the UK, and a lot of people here have passed their test without having to drive in the dark, during bad weather or on motorways (in fact, beginner drivers are forbidden from going on a motorway).
The problem with the test as it stands is that it only tests people under ideal conditions and for city driving.
I have a friend from Germany, and when she was learning to drive, she had to get a certificate from her instructor to show she had done so many hours of night time driving, autobahn driving and driving at in different zones. I think that sort of experience might mean new drivers are better drivers |
