Are electric windows passive or active and how does this make a car safer?

Electric windows can actually be more of a hazard rather than a safety. Each year there are many deaths due to power windows. The problem with power windows is that they can rise with greater force than expected. So if a child is playing with the controls and they put their hand or their head out of the window and the switch is flipped, it can cause an injury or fatality. So what many companies overseas and even here in the U.S. have started doing is to make the switches harder to toggle or make it so that only the driver has access to each window. Power windows are hazards and they require the driver to be aware of their surroundings as it relates to children. I would also say that power windows are active which can contribute to injuries.

Electric windows reduce the amount of time that a driver's left hand must be removed from the steering wheel to open or close the window. This makes a car safer, because it is safer to have one's left hand on the steering wheel than on the window crank of a non-electric window.

On the other hand, in the unlikely event of an accident that makes it impossible to open the doors (either because of damage to the doors or because the car is under water and the water pressure is holding them closed), the windows may be the only way to escape from the car. Electric windows will often not work in this situation. In this respect, they make the car less safe.

Power windows are Active, they only work when told to. They are are a safety feature they are convenience.
