Are manual transmissions just as safe as automatic transmission cars?
|
I think so! Additional Details I mean safe to drive. I know someone who won't drive a stick because you have to have more coordination. I like them because you more control of the road.

Once you have learnt to drive a manual car (almost everyone in the UK has, because automatic cars are usually only on more expensive cars), you don't even think about gears, you just change down when slowing down and up when speeding up. That's all there is to it. So yes, manual cars are just as safe if you know what you are doing. |

Why should they be any less safe? Actually, using your terms, I think a manual transmission is a bit safer, because it requires you to pay more attention to your car while driving. |

Not only are they safer, they are also cheaper to fix if something goes wrong with your tranny. We own 3 cars and they are all newer than 05 and they are all stick shift. |

The safety of a vehicle doesn't have anything to do with the transmission! |

In a crash, you get hurt the same. :-)
Now days, I doubt the Manual is better. People does makes mistakes so is more likely to have an incident due to improper gear or clutch slippage or any other thing.
There was a time where manual trannies were better. Due to the fact that Auto were too heavy and had fewer gears. So as far performance is kind of sluggish. Automatics came with a hefty price as an added feature.
Now the Car Computer does the shifting for you when is optimal for power and comfort. The car even "learn" your driving habits. It has from 4 to even 8 gears (VW Tiptronic has 6). Direct Shift is coming and there is not way that you can out shift an automatic with a manual.
Still used on racing since it gives freedom to the driver to do changes at will and lighter weight. For street purpose is pretty neglectable.
I remember people taking the 747 Torque Flite Chrysler Automatics for drag racing, with the electric push button shifter. Done properly smoked a lot of cars with manual tranies out there. |

No...The only time any vehicle is 'safe' is when nobody is inside of it and the engine is off...Stick or auto trans choice is just a personal preference...Some like to be more involved with the operation of the vehicle...Most auto drivers tend to get better gas mileage though. |
