Are the goverment proposing these new speed limit plans just to make life driving a lot more boring etc?

I mean if we're gonnna end up having stupid speed limits like 50 nsl, etc on even teh safest roads that you could do almost upto 100 safely is there any point in driving? my view is they are doing stupid plans like this just to make life driving more and more boring, pointless, as another excuse to scab our money and catch out the innocent drivers just cos the minority of those who do drive lyk a loonitic and it has to affect the majority of us who do drive safely, at sensible speeds (even if its over the speed limit), why so much bother about speed limits if only 6% of accidents are caused by speed and over 90% of speeding-related accidents are caused by people going too fast for the conditions of the road (like too fast on a sharp bend, fast on wet or icy conditions etc) not purely by just breaking the speed limit of the road whether by a small or large percantage. People will just set crusie control to 50 and think oh il just relax with my feet on the steering wheel, seat back, and just watch the world go by then some person is standing in the way and he/she will b knocked down before the driver even notices regardless of the speed the cars going at because the boredom causes him to not pay attention, plsu it means longer journey time so more likely to increase accidents caused by tiredness at the wheel, I agree with some points and something should be done about those who go way too fast for the road conditions and certainly those who do like 70+ along residential roads or anti-social drivers racing through car parks etc but this is just too far

Are you OLD ENOUGH to REMEMBER when the national speed limit was 55 MPH? it was a STUPID IDEA THEN and it's a STUPID IDEA NOW.. but since AmeriKans don't know HISTORY.. their own or anyone elses.. the morons in Washington will probably make it the speed limit again

No, the main reason they are decreasing the speed limits is because of money, the lower it is the more people will speed and they will get more fines from them. Obviously they won't tell you this so they make up the excuse of 'it's safer', but the fact of the matter is that speed doesn't kill anywhere near as much as careless driving as you stated in your question. Drivers going 50+ mph on residential roads obviously are driving carelessly which is why the speed limits on those roads are 30mph and below.
But as far as decreasing the speed limit on motorways and A roads, that would be a bad idea. I think speed limits on motorways should be increased to 85mph, it would increase the flow of traffic without causing danger, just look at the autobahn in Germany. Decreasing speed limits would be a bad idea.

I think speed limits are a joke. It's perfectly safe to drive 85 mph on the freeway and that reduces driving time. I agree with you the shorter driving time, the less likely you'll get tired. I do agree with you that people shouldn't drive high speeds on residential streets and roads with blind curves and hills. I leave my speeding to the interstate and 2 lane roads/highways that are straight. Sure, I may drive 35 or 40 mph on a 30 mph residential road, but I won't go 60 or more on those roads like some kids do. That's the problem with speeding. It's safer to speed on the freeway than anywhere else.

This sort of question comes up time after time. Now i am nearly at retirement age and have a company car that will do around 140mph so i am told. Why do people speed? I think it is entirely in the mind. You have a car that will do 100mph so you want to do 80mph, well within its capability. You have a car that will do 140mph so you consider 100mph is reasonable - it must be safe you reason because your car is designed to do 140mph. (Trouble is, most drivers brains and reflexes were not designed to deal safely with the constant high speed mental gymnastics required to drive at 140mph!)

If you went back to the 60's when most cars would be pushing to get to 80 and quite a few would not do much over 70, people were perfectly happy, and not bored, to travel on the A roads at 50 - 55mph. As car's top speeds increased so did people desire to use that performance.

To say longer journey times would increase accident levels due to tiredness at the wheel is total crap my friend. 5 hours driving at 90mph will leave you more tired than 7 driving at 50 - 55mph. Believe it, the levels of concentration are so much higher you get tired more quickly. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself. Next time you have to do a long distance drive do the outward run at your normal high speeds then the homeward run 15 - 20mph slower. I can guarantee you that you will feel fresher after the homeward run than you did after the outward one.
