Are you allowed flashing or strobe lights in your car?

Additional Details
I was recently the first on scene at an accident and had to use my car as the first line of defence against fast on coming traffic and my hazard lights didn't seem to be much of an tool to alert drivers to the danger just ahead of where I had placed my car. I feel if i was able to place a flashing strobe on the car maybe it would be a better alert if I was found in the same situation? I look forward to any comments.

If you're in the UK the American answers are wrong. You ARE permitted to have a "warning beacon emitting amber light" at the scene of an emergency and where it is necessary to warn others of the presence of the vehicle.

I have one in the car in connection with jobs I sometimes have to do, and in the past at the scene of an accident have parked the car in the "fend off" position and put the light on top - every little helps until the arrival of the emergency services. Along with the hazard lights.
Source(s):
The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (as amended) (RVLR).

Well, what Ive done is embed lights in all four doors. try that.

I don't see why not (UK). My vans were fitted with amber strobes as standard by the manufacturer. They work on a separate circuit to the normal hazard lights and they can be seen from a much greater distance. As long as they are used to indicate a STATIC hazard I don't see a problem

You can have a strobe emergency beacon in your personal vehicle even if you are not a member of an emergency dept in the USA, the only restriction is that the beacon must be AMBER in color. Using a blue or red warning device if you are not a member of an emergency dept will constitute a severe fine and in many states, prison terms. If you are in the UK I am not familiar with the laws of your country and cannot advise.

What you say sounds like a good idea. You could if worried get yourself an orange flashing light, the sort that workers use, like BT for example, when working with their van parked on the roadside, You can get the small round ones that magnetically stick on your roof (a bit like the old american police chase movie red lights they stick on the roof out of the window!!) They work off a cigar lead, my old bus company used to have one in the boot of the clio van they used for the engineers - just stick on top of the car, plug in and flash flash flash!

Might consider getting one myself - the amount of driving i do - could be useful if involved or witnessed a nasty accident on a country lane or similar.

The other thing I would recommend - compulsorary in some european countrys - is a red advanced warning triangle - some cars come with these in the boot. The DSA recommend placing these arond 45 metres (147 feet) from your car - how the hell you are meant to judge this without a very long tape measure - god only knows but hey!

No. But you should consider safety flare lights or triangle flares. You sit it on the side of the road. I have a flashing red lantern just in case of emergency. And always pull over out of the lanes of traffic. If an oncoming car hits your vehicle then it can cause your vehicle to hit you while you are outside the car. This has happened to many state troopers in routine traffic stops.

Check out some of these products.

In the UK you cannot have anything flashing or moving other than your amber flashing indicators.

How much fun would that be though??!!

In the uk only the emeragancy services are allowed to have flashing lights or strobe lights, Just park your car with your hazard lights on, and tell the drivers to turn around and call the police thats all you can do, I have experianced it in the passed.
