Are you guilty of this?

I have been driving since the eighties and have never been the cause of accident (though I have been hit a few times). It never ceases to amaze me with the number of times people fail to indicate where they are going. Mostly when doing a left at a roundabout, or any manoeuvre or turn in a supermarket car park.

The nation can be divided into two groups:

1) Those who believe that the car won't go round a corner without the indicators switched on. They indicate, but not until they start the manoeuvre.

2) Those who have found that the car will go round a corner without the indicators switched on. They don't bother.

Of course there should be a third group who think that indicators are designed to give advance warning of your intentions to other drivers, but I think that's you and me.

Sometimes I think that the costlier the vehicle, the most expensive option for it are turn signals. They must cost as much as the car itself, because I have never seen one of those pricey cars use turn signals.

I've only been driving the last 4 years have passed my test and all, but yeah, that really irritates me when people don't idicate. It's so dangerous. No wonder there are so many acciedents on the road : (

not indicating is one of my pet hates, I've been driving for about 11 years and I still tell my parents off hen they don't indicate, I find the worst is on motorways because people tend to change lane slowly so you can't tell they are drifting into you at 70 miles an hour!

Like you, I hate poor indication. It is either laziness or a lack of knowledge.

'old know all' I'm in that third group with you. The worst m/c accident I had was when a member of group 2 decided to turn left from a right-hand lane, right across me. I hit his rear door. To a police man on the scene, who witnessed it, he said ' The m/c should have know I was going to turn as I live in that street'. He was done for dangerous driving.

From my experience taxi drivers/white van drivers/and certain large German car drivers appear to either not know how to indicate or just feel that they have their own set of rules for driving and dont have to. B*stards!!!!

Some people seem to think that they will be helping the planet by saving electricity through not using their indicators.

Some have their hands too full of course, with either a mobile phone, a newspaper, a map, a comb or makeup items, a chocolate or candy bar, a bottle of coke or cup of tea or coffee etc.

And yet others will state that they looked around and coudn't see any other traffic either behind them or approaching them, so they didn't think indicating would be necessary.

All of the above are of course quite ligitimate and valid reasons for not indicating.

There are of course also the OO7 drivers, who are either paranoid, or delusional and think that they are being followed. Obviously they wouldn't want to 'go public' on which direction they intended to go in.

Lastly I think, there are those who are either exceeding the speed limits by so much they therefore reach junctions before they expect to; consequently they do not have time to indicate. And those who are totally lost and therefore don't know which way to indicate.

Many Police car drivers seem to fall into the latter categories as they frequently seem to overshoot the junction they need to take, and end up having to turn around and come back for a second try.

To make matters even worse they will frequently have sirens blasting which creates total mayhem amongst many civilian drivers, who will respond by going into some state of panic, and blue lights, headlights, and hazard lights all flashing simultaniously, and therefore making it impossible to see which direction they intend to go in anyway.

Even when on those rare occasions when one sees a Police car driving within the speed limit, they still seem to think that using indicators is somehow beneath them. So in most cases they don't seem to bother.

Perhaps we need to return to having the Traffic Police, whose main responsibility was to deal with traffic issues and caution drivers about their driving practices. It was somewhat annoying to be pulled up by them, but it did seem to have a beneficial effect.

Use turn signals.

Shambles
Fully agree with you its not as if its difficult to flip the stalk up or down to switch them on. Even when there is no traffic around I use them to inform pedestrians of my intentions.

Horndog
Hmm. It seems that other people are aware of these German cars without signals... Makes me wonder if they will ever get around to installing them and perhaps making a note of them in the owner's manual.

SnoddersB
The use of indicators seems to be waning. Is it the driving instruction/test or is is laziness, probably the latter. As a pedestrian I will look for turning traffic before crossing a junction and have frequently been the cause of some oik who wouldn't indicate having to stop. Tough.

I use my signals all the time. Los Angeles is insurance fraud country. When someone does not signal its big trouble.

Old know all said it all. Put me in the third group also.

I use my turn signal 99% of the time. :) If I don't use a signal, it's typically at night in a parking lot at Wal-Mart and no one else is even around.

tipsy cat
no but i find it irritating when people leave their indicators on after making their manoeuvre

NO!
I cannot believe people who don't either.
It is so easy, and it gives everyone a fighting chance to see where you intend to go, crap drivers thats the top and bottom of it!

I agree this is annoying, and I always use my signals. More annoying to me, however, is "snail-man." You know him, he's the little ancient man, driving 20 in a 55 mph zone, with that one blinker constantly on!
Usually, he's so short (old age shrinkage, I guess) he can't see over the wheel. Instead of driving something his size, however, he's always in a huge car, like a 74 Chrysler New Yorker, for pity's sake! Or a full size pick-up.
His left blinker is always on, so you're scared to pass, in case he actually does turn somewhere. And these snail-men are always most proliferate when you are running late and need to get somewhere quickly!
Just felt the need to air my pet peeve! Thanks!

i do always use indicator even if no one is behind me or even in a clear area. the reason is: afraid i might be caught by some hiding police officers, though they would say, you only didn't spot us!!!
