Don't know the law here, but in Califonia, people pass on the right all the time and it pisses me off. It conflicts with the "rule of the road" in my opinion.
Was in Germany last year and absolutely no one passes on the right. Well, almost no one. I was cruising in the fast lane with 2 lanes to my right. A driver approached from behind and I did not move right. After five minutes the guy finally passed me on the right. The road was empty, no one else around and the guy waited five minutes before passing me. Oh, the look on his face. So if you go to Germany, remember to stay right and only use the left lane for passing. It also is a good rule for here though few follow it. |

You should never try to pass a semi on the right if you can help it. They have 'blind spots' where they can't see you in their mirrors. Most truckers only use the left lane to pass and will move over as soon as they can. See the picture at

It is against the law to pass traffic on the right. Admittedly, it is not enforced very often.
That aside, it is a very bad idea to pass a semi on the right. First, because it is not the correct way to pass, the driver will not be as watchful for that possibility. Second, there is a blind spot area in which he cannot see you at all. |

Left lane is the passing lane. I don't know where you are, but if you are caught driving in the left lane in Texas you will get a ticket. |

Preferably they shouldn't be going slower than you while in the left lane - but if they just won't get out of the way, go for it!!! |

As a rule, you should always pass on the left. |

NEVER pass a truck on the right! if a truck is in the left lane, the safe money is to bet he has good reason to be there, and will move to the right when it is safe to do so.
As some others have noted, there is a blind spot on the truck, so if the driver checks his mirror when you are in the blind spot, he may well push you off the road when he starts his move back to the right. (Incidentally, YOU would be at fault as you were performing an illegal operation at the time.)
Truck drivers usually do a good job of keeping tabs on who is coming up behind them, so these type of accidents are not very common, but they can and do happen from time to time. |

If at all possible you should never pass a car or a truck on the right. Regardless of how many lanes there are |

No! Passing on the right is always a bad idea, it's the merging/exit lane and cars expect to be passed on the left. |
