Are you supposed to turn your car off while pumping gas?

I always turn the car off, but it seems a lot of people don't. Which is correct?

Yes, turn your vehicle off because the vapors from the fuel could be ignited by the electrical coming from your ignition system, meaning from under the hood.

You are supposed to turn of the car BEFORE you pump the gas, NOT "while" you are already pumping it.

Yes, you used to see signs to this effect at petrol stations.

There is a lot of explosive petrol vapour in the air at petrol stations.

BTW, many of us have to to release the filler cap.
