Actually, the driving school I used had a motorway driving class which they offered after you passed your test. I'd recommend one of those.
The basics of good driving are paying careful attention to what is going on. If you are nervous about being on the motorway, keep your speed down. The faster you go, the less time you have to react to something bad happening.
Stay in the left lane unless you are overtaking. Always use your mirrors, look and signal before changing lanes. Always leave at least a two second gap between you and the car in front, four seconds in the rain, and six or more in ice and bad weather. You can watch the car in front pass a marker of some kind and then count how many second it takes for you to pass the same object. If you pass it in less than two seconds you are driving too close.
You can practice driving on a dual carriageway first and then try a motorway. Ask drivers which is a quiet one near you, and go out and drive on a Sunday when it's nice and quiet. Drive a couple of exits down, get off, turn around, drive back. Get some practice merging onto the motorway, overtaking, getting off the motorway. Have an experienced driver or instructor go with you to give you pointers.
Good luck. |

Keep your eyes moving, drive defensively, and try to anticipate the other drivers actions. I like to look at the drivers face to get a read on their feelings, and then look at the wheels of the car to got an idea for their direction. And remember, you control your vehicle, if it don't look right avoid it!!! |

My best suggestion is to really understand how to drive in more challanging situations. If you can control your car at a high level, then you will have less of an issue avoiding accidents on the motorway.
Learn to react quickly and predict what surrounding cars are going to be doing. Ex. Start slowing down before the two cars ahead of you do, that way you have a longer following distance, and if one of them has to slam on their brakes, you dont.
Start w/ defensive driving courses and work your way up to the racing cources. It might seem like overkill to do the racing stuff, but when you start to get more comfortable with your car, you'll want to go faster (i guess its just human?).
What you'll get out of the racing cources are proper driving technique. Its MUCH safer to know what will spin out your car before you take a curve the wrong way, hold your brakes mid turn and start to accel quickly, etc..
Best Wishes. |

Golden rules:
1) Always assume the other guy will make a mistake and bump against you
2) Learn to drive slow - this way you will have a better control of your vehicle
3) Be patient - waiting one minute is better than saving that one minute and taking a chance that you will land in hospital |

drive slow until you get feel confident. Follow all the road rules and you should be safe. Road accidents can be decreased only if there is a collective effort. Even if you are a safe and careful driver there are other fools on the road. So if an effort is taken on a collective basis, the number of the accidents will certainly decrease. |

I will drive with my speed in check and will not go over 60 km/hr. No drink and drive. Avoid wee hours of night while driving, especially 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Holding the steering tight with a firm grip and respect for other drivers / travellers is also a key to good driving. |

the biggest thing is to keep your emotions in check and never let your anger get the best of you, because that will only lead to road rage and increase your chance of being in an accident. |
