At an intersection, drivers turning left must yield to? (What does this mean? YIELD)?

MJ
All approaching traffic. Yield, since you are obviously studying for your driving test, means to allow other traffic/cars to pass you first before you turn left, etc. Traffic travelling straight has the 'right of way' over traffic that is turning at an unprotected turn (not a green left turn signal)

Please be careful out there!

Ms. Nessa
stop and proceed with caution.

How the hell did you ever get a license if you don't know this??? I want to be the first to take out a life insurance policy on you with double indemnity of car accidents.

yeild means Take caution. drivers going straight have the right away so the driver turning has to yield the straight traffic

I don't think any/many Ft. Worth, TX. drivers know the word YIELD! It means to stop for a brief pause and look for oncoming traffic, that has the rightaway.

Yield means you allow them through the intersection before you go!!

granmasunflower

Yield means to give way to. If you must yield to another driver, it means that they have the right of way and you have to let them go first.
Drivers turning left must always yield to oncoming traffic (drivers coming straight from the opposing direction or turning right onto the street you want to turn onto).

galaxiexl
You must give way to any and all through traffic.Since right turns are with the flow they can continue after a complete stop if traffic is clear.Lefties are at the mercy of through traffic,You must yeild! If you are broadsided(T-Boned)you will almost always be found at fault and cited if you live through it.

yield means to slow down, look for traffic, and if there is you might have to stop. It's kind of like caution

Rich
When you yield, you let the other person go first. You go before others yielding to you.

Al Mac Wheel
I guess this means you have not yet passed your test for getting a driver's license.

Here is definition of the word in case you are not familiar with it. Also some illustrations what the sign looks like (it is usually yellow, with black printing, in USA, but it is other colors in other countries.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yield_sign

Basically it means that YOU DO NOT HAVE RIGHT OF WAY unless there's no other traffic there.

If you come to an intersection where you have a stop sign & the other traffic does not, they you have to stop, and wait until they are not there. If no one else there, you have to stop at stop sign anyway.

But if it was a YIELD sign, and they were not there, then you do not have to stop. You only have to stop if the other traffic is there, to let them go first.

a: to give place or precedence : acknowledge the superiority of someone else

b: to be inferior <our dictionary yields to none>

c: to give way to or become succeeded by someone or something else.

it means that all other vehicles have the right of way to pass and you are supposed to STOP or WAIT on others to freely pass thru the intersection... and if they run you over, it's your fault...

UCANTCME
Indicates that a driver of a vehicle must slow down and prepare to stop if necessary (usually while merging into traffic on another road) but does not need to stop if there is no reason to. A driver who has actually stopped in this situation is said to have yielded the right-of-way to through traffic on the main road.
