At what age should a drivers license be taken away ?

Some elderly people do not belong behind the wheel of a weapon as big as a car . There are alot of children and adults alike, especially on motorycles just ran over because they don't have the speed in the mind to process reactions any more. I've had a couple of people I knew get killed, just get ran over from behind.

There is no way to say 100% a "have to" age to give up a license.

Some people, at 70, absolutely should not be driving. My mother, however, is 69, and she is totally with it physically, emotionally, and mentally, and should NOT have her license gone (she's gone her whole driving "career" without a ticket or wreck, too!!!)

upsetinkenosha
around 70 based on thier ability to still drive

Sam
There is no uniform age when people become incompetent.

It might be a good idea to institute re-testing at age 70, though. A lot of people would pass at 70, but they'd start dropping out as they got older. Some just would decide not to take the test.

i think that what should happen is that once you hit your 60th birthday you should be tested for driving and than every 5 years after that. it should be free of charge to the seniors, just a safety precaution.

This is why everyone that gets a license should be retested every 7 years. This way there is no way someone can say that we are targeting people because of their age. It should be about driving skills.

... agree with Bluffmike, however, LATEST when people start asking questions like this.

At whatever age they cannot effectively operate and control the vehicle. For some it is 16 and for some 99.

Most accidents are caused by younger drivers, so, I'd say, take the license away from age 17-27.

CS
once they reach 60 i think they should have a test every year or 2 or 4 or whatever.

It should not be base by age, but by skills.

It shouldn't be based on age, it should be based on ability. But there should be an age that you have to go in every year and do a driving test. Maybe something where there liscense are only renewed for a year, so they can show their ability. Show they are not a danger to society by being behind the wheel of a car. Probably somewhere around 70.

Unfortunately there are hundreds of accidents each year caused by careless, reckless, or impaired driving. And age has very little to do with it - sometimes it stupidity (such as drinking and driving), sometimes it's a disabilities (such as dimentia). I believe that our roads would be safer if all drivers had to be retested at 5 year intervals (how many of you had your parents contradicting the rules when they taught you to drive). In addition, the medical professionals should also be more vigilant to medical conditions that may affect a person's ability to drive safely. In the end there's not right age, just ability.

at age 75, from then on they should take da bus 4r free

I don't think there is a "have to" age, though I think every driver should have to pass a short written and physical driving exam every 2 years. It would keep people who are unable to drive off the road, be it because of age or ignorance.

i feel that after the age of retierment a person should be given a road test every year to be sure that they dont pose a risk on the road and should only be charged a fee for this test if they fail.and if they do fail then they should be given 6 months to be able to retake the test.and perhaps be given assistance with public transpertation until they retakt the road test.its better to be safe than sorry.

I don't believe that age has much to do with it. The mental capability of the driver is the question to answer. Dementia and other mind ailments are the cause of accidents. When someone looses there licence, they loose there Independence. That's why most aged people don't want to give it up.
