At what age should children be taught about road safety?

happyliberal
start as young as possible. Eg when crossing the road in the pushchair get them to look for the green man or say you are looking our for cars

Leggy_Babe
As young as possible, coz then by the time they are old enough to cross roads, it will be second nature to them. My mum used to get me doing the green cross code even when i was still in a pushchair.

I talked to my children about it while they were Babes in the pram. They couldn't understand, of course, but it became second nature to them when they could.

when they can understand what you are telling them.

As soon as they start crossing roads!

sananabetahi
As soon as possible!

I have read somewhere though that children do not develop the perception of danger from moving vehicles until about 7 or 8 yrs old

So don't take chances

tonyinspain
when they understand you

I don't think there is an age that you have to start teaching it. If you talk to your child every time they are in the car the will soak it in and learn about safety, even if you just say yellow light its going to turn red and we are to far from the intersection so we got to stop. Say that a few times and then next time you come to a yellow light ask the kid what it means. If you walk a lot of places that is a great way to teach them. You should be talking to your child any way to help them grow and develop so just talk to them about what the cars are doing and people walking and the people on there bikes are doing. that is the best way to teach a child so it dose not have an age to start.

ASAP and keep doing it

soon as +they can walk! (actually after they recognise what is the 'road')

As soon as possible. Try to make learning road safety fun, by looking out for different things. When out, even in a pushchair, try to make them aware of things going on around them on the roads. As soon as they are able, let them press the button when crossing at a pelican crossing, and let them watch for the green man.

It should be fun for both child and parent.

As soon as possible

It starts in the pram or buggy or car seat by Mum or Dad following the rules of the road. Babies start to copy and learn from what happens around them as soon as they are born. They need proper education in the ways of life from then on. They learn more from Mum in the first 4 or 5 years of their life than in the rest of it.

Formal teaching of rules for crossing the road should start as soon as they are old enough to walk outside along a pavement with Mum or Dad holding their hand or being on a set of reins.

Serious question gets serious answer.
