No problem with them learning to drive at 16 but only with qualified adult as supervision until the turn 18.
And there should also be a restriction on the type /power of the car allowed a young driver,

No boy racer types.

The police have no say in the matter, it's up to the legislators. 17 to 18 is a good starting point. I prefer 18 as it absolves me (as a parent) of financial responsiblity for the actions of my child over whom I have no control when he or she is driving alone. When my son turned 16, I refused to sign for him to get a license until he came up with the money for his own insurance.

to be honest, I think 18yrs old. these 16yr olds are too careless. I work in the hospital and I see alot of accidents and most of them are caused from the younger crowd. Sorry! that is my opionion.....

Age should'nt be the question. there are some people who drive like a blind midget, and they are are well of a stereotypical, mature age to drive. not all, but some kids can drive well before sixteen, i've seen it. (on country roads) it all depends on the personality of the driver is what i'm getting at. you know that they wont make a personality test for new drivers, but it would work better than pulling a number from a sombrero, and saying yeah your 16 you, can drive now!

18. when you are responsible enough to care for your own actions!

I think 16 is fine but there should be a limit on what type of car they can legaly drive. I'm sorry but a 16 year old that just got his license DOES NOT need a 500 HP car, or a car that costs $50,000 or more. 9 times out of 10 it is going to wind up totalled, them getting a ton of tickets, or themselves getting killed.

The police aren't the ones who make that decision, it is the legislatures. 16 seems like a good age.
