Yes. All of those qualities are needed when it comes to driving. That is what many drivers lack now a days. They don't have self discipline so they make horrible decisions behind the wheel, such as talking on the cell phone while driving, texting, eating while driving, speeding excessively, not yielding to on coming traffic, and not abiding by traffic laws in general. Secondly, having careful planning. This is a crucial part of driving. If you do not plan ahead of time while driving you increase the risk of an accident. One example, is using your turn signal. I have seen countless times drivers that did not use their turn signal and just turned or swerved to another lane. This is highly annoying and you create a hazard if you do not plan ahead of time. Let the driver know what it is you plan to do before you do it. Finally, applied effort. Without effort you will be a driving hazard. You must practice to become a good driver, and then start doing it. You won't be a good driver if you don't apply what you have practiced. That is an important thing that many drivers, particularly teen drivers do not do, and that is apply what they have learned. Each characteristic you have named is important to the skill of driving and without them, you will have an increase in accidents and fatalities.

Sure, but most people probably won't take the time to do all of that. Overall, I'm a good driver. I try not to do things that are unsafe and I'm always alert.

Let's just say that all three of these qualities are required of a good driver.

Add to that, accurate knowledge of the rules of the road and some experience behind the wheel could complete the formula.

"julie c" is dead wrong. Not only can these be taught, it is essential that they be taught to anyone expecting to get a license to drive. (not that every lesson is heeded, but that's another story)

I drive for a living. For the last 15 years I've been driving 12 hours a day. I do not consider myself a "good driver." Any one can make a mistake, and that mistake can be fatal. Overconfidence in your abilities will get someone killed. I leave plenty of following distance in front of me, and traffic tends to travel in packs, so I adjust my speed so I don't travel in the pack with everyone else. I don't want to rely on my reaction time, I want plenty of time to react. The worst drivers out there on the road are those younger guys in their 20's and early 30's who think they are NASCAR material.

It would help, however its usually a gift you're born with. If you're alert by nature and notice whats going on around you, then you can't go wrong! You either have it or you don't..can't teach that!
