Before crossing a street, which is best? Looking "left-right-left" or looking "left-right"?

Depending on what country you are in, first look to the traffic in the nearest lanes (left in USA, right in UK, etc.) If clear, look at traffic in furthest lanes. If clear or speeds will allow time to get into or across, then look at near lanes to confirm clearance and speed of any oncoming cars.
In the process, also monitor any cars across from you to see how they are turning and check to see movement from cars pulling into traffic from driveways and keep an eye behind you to see if anyone is doing something stupid.
This applies whether you are walking or driving. If you are walking, also monitor cars turning left from either direction (which a driver would have to wait for in any case) and whether these might be making a U-turn and keep your ears alert for squealing tires to monitor stupid drivers.

Seen it too many times to think different.

Left right left and keep looking as you cross, cars are fast.

You should also use this when driving..

i just got in a habit of looking left to right and especially if near a real busy intersection ,it can be clear one second,an the next time there will be a vehicle present,but i guess its what ever works best for you that counts,good luck hope this helps.

I teach my son who is 5 years old left-right-left.
Look left first because in the USA that is where the car that'd hit you first is coming from. Then right because one coming from that direction would also hit you. Then left again to be sure one that'd be the initial danger hasn't come flying out of nowhere. As you are walking across the first half of the road safely (the 'left') then you look to the right again to be sure that it's still clear. If not you'd stay on the line until you could continue, but obviously, that's the worst case scenario.

Left again because something might be coming that could hit you in the spit second that you looked right.

Heck, just be like the kids I drive by every day.... don't look at all and just cross the street counting on everyone that's driving by to stop for them. Don't use the crosswalks either for that matter.

one would think it would be sufficient enough..but cars somtimes seem to come from the middle of no where :0/
