Best way to deal with 'Ultra-Speeders'?

I'm no slow-poke on the road, usually driving 10-15 mph over the limit where it's reasonable to do so, but I was almost run over today by a speed demon coming up from behind at, I would estimate, just under 100 mph.. I was going 75 in the fast lane, the road was clear of traffic, then this guy shows up. I signaled to let let him pass when I saw him in the distance, began my lane change and realized he was changing lanes too ! To avoid a collision, I aborted my lane change, which left him tailgating me in his BMW..
Looking back, I realize I should have been in lane #2 to begin with, but I was wondering: What's the best way to maneuver when faced with this situation ?

Technically there is no such thing as a "fast" lane or "slow" lane.

On a divided highway with 2 lanes going the same direction, there is a "driving" lane and a "passing" lane.

When you are not passing, you should be in the driving lane, (with a few exceptions).

If someone comes up upon me that fast I stay in the lane I'm in. No way in Hades am I going to change lanes in front of a car that is exceeding my speed by that much. That's suicide.
Where I live the roads are very lightly travelled and my average speed may be in the area of 80-85 MPH. But I NEVER race up behind or alongside traffic that is doing the speed limit. I always slow and activate my left turn signal to indicate my intentions. The people out here are obscenely polite and eventually they do give up the lane. Passing on the right is also allowed here but I have never made it a practise to do that.

Friendly Stranger..
The thing to note is that you were doing what you were supposed to do in this situation. If the speed limit is 55 or 60 mph, then you were traveling in the range that is correct although you might want to lower it down to at least 5 mph above the limit. Otherwise you were right to remain in the fast lane. The fast lane does not mean you can go 20 or 30 mph above the limit. That is where you enter the territory of reckless driving. That person who tail gated you and was speeding way above the limit should be fined if caught by the police. But the thing to do in this situation is to let the person go around. If they are in that big of a hurry, most if not all speeders will tail gate you, and then when they have had enough they will go around you. In that situation, don't flinch. Stay in your lane and go the correct speed limit. By moving out of the way, you have given up your power as it relates to keeping up with your own driving standards. Don't give in to road bullies. If they want to drive that fast, let them go around.

Stay in the right lane and only use the left lane for passing. When done passing and there's a large gap, move back to the right lane. If someone comes up behind you in the left lane while passing, move in the right lane when you can even in a small gap to let him by.

It sounds like this was on the interstate with a speed limit of 75 or was the speed limit lower? As long you're passing, you can remain in the left lane and pass in a timely manner. Even if you're going 10-15 miles over the speed limit, you should still drive in the right lane and only use the left lane for passing. The only exception is if there's a lot of merging traffic and exiting traffic in the right lane, you can stay in the left lane as long you're moving with the flow and faster then traffic in the right lane.

I really don't understand the first 2 answers, their logical. Saying it's not illegal to pass in the right lane. The right lane is the slow lane. Someone passing at about 100 mph in that lane could cause an accident. And drivers shouldn't have to go around someone in the right lane because it can be unsafe to do so. Nobody should hog the left lane. That's why they call it the passing lane for a reason. I like referring to the left lane as the passing lane instead of the fast lane.

I agree with everyone that says you drive in the slow(or right) lane regardless of your speed unless you are passing someone. In some states such as Pennsylvania that's the law. Left lane is for passing only! It does sound like the other driver was speeding without thinking. It's not how fast you drive that's important but how you drive fast. The other driver should have seen you in front going slower than him and adjusted his speed accordingly until you moved over. He was wrong to move to the right lane to pass. Once you saw him move to the right lane you were right to remain in your lane which you admit you shouldn't have been there to begin with. I'm hoping both of you used your turn signals.
