look too closely at their tyres to do so because we could have had such a horrific accident if it hadn't have been for someone pointing this out to us re. one of our car tyres recently.

I TOTALLY agree with you!
You'd be horrified at the state some tyres are in. I get to see this everyday.
Blowouts occur when a tyre deflates slowly. There is no longer enough air to support the weight of the car, so the tyrewall bears the brunt. It gets hot, and before you know it, POP. no more tyre.
Take a couple of mins have a look especially the bits you don't normally see.

My step dad had one a while ago. If he hadn't reacted how he did he would of been berried in the front of a lorry. It was his own falt though I had wand him that it might happen after he whacked the tyre against the curb 2 days before. |

Agreed, the best thing to look for are bulges in the tyre wall. It means the internal lining has split and could burst any minute. |

I had one in a car I co-owed with a friend. (He bought the tyre.) Luckily it was on the rear so we just coasted to a halt. It looked like rubber confetti. Of course we had no spare and by the time we got a new tyre it was dark. We changed the tyre by the light of a hurricane lamp using a ball peen hammer, a big screwdriver and one tyre lever. The following night a stake went through the sidewall of the new tyre on a detour. One blowout and four flats in 3 days. You can bet I have never bought cheap tyres since. |

semi's should be considered rolling time bombs. ever see what happens when a semi tire lets go? god help the biker that happens to be by that tire when it goes, it's more than capable of killing the rider, it has enough power behind it to cause damage to cars, and the strips of rubber it flings off can be 3' long and flung as high as 60'. car tires are nothing compared to semi's. |
