Yellow is used on undivided roads with 2 way traffic.
A single broken yellow line- passing is allowed in both directions.
A double yellow line- no passing allowed in either direction
A solid line with a broken line- passing is allowed in the lane that has the broken line.
Lanes that are boxed off with a solid line nearest the lane of travel with a broken line on either side of the lane is a center left turn only lane. Traffic from either direction can enter that lane (must watch you do not run into someone head on) to be able to make a left turn.
Just because the lane markings indicate that passing is allowed from your lane, you must still make sure the lane is clear of oncoming traffic before you can overtake the vehicle in front of you. If it is not safe to pass or you feel that you cannot complete the pass safely, then you must wait until you can safely pass the other vehicle.
If you hit an oncoming vehicle when passing a slower vehicle going in the same direction as you, you will be at fault for the accident & can be cited for unsafe passing, passing in the face of oncoming traffic, driving left of center, just to name a few of the terms states use in their wording. |

Single yellows = passable
Two Solid Yellows = No passing on either side
If you have double solid yellows on the road, and suddenly your side turns to broken yellows, that means only YOUR side can pass, the other side CANT. Vice versa. |

Broken white lines - Lanes markers for multiple lanes in same direction.
Solid white lines - Do not change lanes.
Broken Yellow lines - Lanes markers for traffic flowing in opposite directions. You May pass when safe to do so.
Solid Yellow Lines next to broken lines - No passing in direction of travel with the solid Yellow line.
Two solid yellow lines - No passing in either direction, You may cross the center line to make a turn into or out of traffic.
Double Double Yellow lines (Four lines), No passing and you may not cross over these lines at any time for any reason. |

Single broken yellow line means traffic is flowing both ways. And you can pass anytime. Solid double yellow lines mean no one can pass. |

I'm glad that there are people like George A and Dennis F that actually know what they are talking about. So far they're the only ones hit all the points with knowledgeable answers. |

The single broken yellow lines means you can pass cars. The solid double yellow lines mean you can not pass. The center traffic lane means you can turn left and make a u turn. |

Double solid - do not cross. broken yellow ok to cross and pass other vehicles. center traffic lane ok to enter for turning etc. |

it doesnt matter if they are single or double just remember this: if its on your side you have to follow the rules.
dashed lines mean you can pass (think of it as a door you can go through)
solid means no passing (like a closed door)
yellow means 2 way
white means 1 way |

ok well yellow lines in the first place indicate a separation of flowing traffic (meaning, on the other side of the yellow line, traffic is not going your direction)
single broken means you can pass a car that's ahead of you (but don't forget to return to your lane)
Two sets of solid double yellow means the you treat it as a physical barrier; basically don't cross it no matter what..
and I don't quite understand the last one I think you might be referring to a turn lane, If so it means you can enter the lane to join Left moving traffic, or to make a Left turn (in most countries)
here's the CA version, you can always look online...

sometimes one broken yellow lines mean both can turn into a store or something on the other side of the road for the driver for both sides of the trafic
sometimes when you see one straight yellow line that is connected all the way it means that neither can turn
when you see one connected yellow and one broken yellow it means one side can't turn and one side can |

Single broken yellow lines means you can overtake traffic on that side. Two sets of solid double yellow lines means you cannot overtake. It's the same with HOV lines. A solid line means you can't move out. |

single broken - if the broken lines are on your side of other line beside it, that means you can pass the person in front of you.
but if the broken lines are on the other lane's side of the road, you cannot pass.
double lines- you may not pass. |

everyone else answered the question well..
dotted you can pass
solid you cannot.
follow whichever is on your side of the lane.
but to your details..
you will not crash because you would never be passing over dotted yellow line to get into the lane next to you by doing a u-turn into oncoming traffic.
there will either be lights and signs and guides and a safe way to do this without crashing lol. don't worry. |
