Can America handle a higher Speed Limit ???

Being that most of us drive at or about 80mph on the freeway, should that be the national speed limit? why or why not?

Texas is the first. Do you think other states will follow?

I hope so. I'm a defiant leadfoot.

and they should also set a higher minimum speed for the left lane, and start pulling over the 55ers who are the cause of most of my roadrage.

CHICANO
Sure why not.

I think it will rise as cars get safer and better. Maybe once alcohol breathalizers are in all new cars, as alcohol related accidents are half of all car accidents in USA. I would guess that just major highways would increase first. (I can't drive ....55........)

it truly depends how safe the driver can know they can drive at that speed or not....... i my self i can feel good at any speed still feel safe.but i was in allot of vehicle accidents nothing would scare me don't people sneak over the speed limit already?like for example the person that hit my family and i in 1977 he was going over 89 miles per hour through a caution yellow light. almost killed me by only 3 inches i have piece of my scull missing and broken hip, pelvis they told my family oh the pelvis is doing fine. we didn't know ................ now i have seizures and aurthritis in my hip . also had a broken shoulder and compound ficture of my elbow.

your joking right? America could handle a lot of things before we get a speed limit increase, hummm like maybe a president instead of a dictator, but thats another story! YESSSSSSSS my GOD WHO WANTS TO DRIVE FREAKIN 55. And if you do, do us all a favor and take public transportation, you should not be on the road to begin with!

The main problem with your question is "national speed limit".
That was tried before, and I believe found to be unconstitutional. Remember the 55mph national limit? That's why it's gone.
Using the fact that you constantly break the law is not really a good reason to change one. Or re-create a bad one. People who want to change things really need to look at the why of the way things are. They also need to think about what may happen as a result of these changes before suggesting them. Now, when your limit is 80, are you going to be doing 95 all the time?

I think they should, especially on long stretches with limited access points. If everyone is driving fast it is much safer than when some are moving slow and some fast.

Cars today are FAR safer than they were just 30 years ago and the speed limit should reflect that.

And sacrifice all that free tax revenue for our salaries? I think not.

It's good for the state to keep the speeding limit low. They will say it's for the safety of the people but in actuality it's because that's how the make money just like marijuana.

Holydiver_33
That would make it harder for them to give us speeding tickets, where would the donut funds come from?

I can be legal then.

Yep, for sure. The only problem is the interstates in certain areas are very crowded and some people want to drive slow in the passing lane. This causes a lot of back up and potentially dangerous situations. They need to three lane the interstates, especially on the east coast. Then it might be safer.

if you make it 80, people will just start going 80-100.

For most cars yes the US could handle a higher limit. But most big SUV's and Trucks have bad stopping distances, so that would give you a No.

Why, do you ask??????.....I wud think we are killing ourselves as fast as everyone else
