Can a windshield shatter all on its own, if yes why?

If it was very hot outside and your pick-up was parked in the sun for a long time before you washed it, and the water was cold, it could easily have cracked -- like a hairline crack -- that would be destined to just keep right on crackin'. It could also be that a rock was thrown into it as you were driving, again made a small indent -- and then proceeded to completely crack. That shatterproof glass is designed to do exactly that rather than shatter into a million pieces all at once. Hope you had insurance. Dang!!

i would think it could only happen as a result of freezing. are all the guns still on your gun rack?

HEATING AND COOLING , CAUSES EXPANSION AND RETRACTION . STRESS FROM THE TEMP CHANGE COULD CAUSE THAT TO HAPPEN , FROM THE WASH TO SUN TO RAIN TO HEAT

Yours is a little bit different case.

But if you leave a vehicle with the windows closed in the heat. The window or windows will eventually shatter.

i have seen this happen from extreme heat,,but not like that before,it it got hot really fast and there wasn't a window down its possible,other wise its just one of those freak things that happen to them once in a while,i had one do this from leaving the windows up on it during a real hot week,but never after driving one,its possible something hit it,maybe a rock or a bb gun,anythings possible,look around in it for a sign of anything that might have hit it,good luck.

Yes it can, due to heat stress related issues. I have had that happen to a car I had.

Yep, heat and cold water can do it. Mine busted when my husband washed the windsheild with cold water from the hose when it had been sitting in the sun on a 95 degree day.

I also had a windsheild break on a van quite a few years ago that was caused by rust under the trim putting pressure on the glass till it just gave and cracked. The glass guy told me it was really common with the make and model I had.

It happened to my friend's minivan. He was sitting in the car waiting for his wife and suddenly the window just shattered. Scared the --- out of him! He couldn't figure out why either , there had been no cracks in it at all.

Most likely someone broke it. Perhaps a bb gun or some other small projectile.
