Can anyone tell me in what position should your hands be on a steering wheel? Is it 3 and 9 o'clock?

Can't tell you about racers, but the safest position is 3 and 9, like you said. That is so the airbag will hit you in the right place if you smash into somebody. Before airbags, they said 10 and 2 was best, so maybe that's what racers do?

In a car with airbags, it should be 3 & 9.

If you're in a car with airbags, and you have your hands at 10 & 2, and your airbag deploys, your hand/arms are going to hit you in the face and you run the risk of also breaking your wrists and/or arms.

This is also why most companies are designing their steering wheels with the most comfortable position at 9 & 3.

Oval track racers place their left hand at 10 with their left elbow at 4. giving them leverage in the corners.

It used to be 10 and 2. However, that puts at least part of the your arm in line with the air bag if it goes off, which means your hand is smashed into your face at 200 miles per hour. That is why it is now recommended to use 9 and 3. Racers have nothing to do with it, they are trained differently, they drive race cars differently from their regular road cars, and race cars don't have air bags. Many instructors actually teach their students to place the hands at 8 and 4, which keeps the hands and arms out of the air bag path as well, however, I am more comfortable with 9 and 3 myself.

the old saying is 10 and 2 but in reality, the left is out the window flipping off some idiot that cut you off while your cellphone is in the right and a knee at 6 handles the wheel actually with racers it depends on the person, type of track, type of car, etc.

Racers place their hands on the steering wheel on 2 and 10 o' clock, cause you can have more control over your car also a person have better upper body stenght, which makes them focus better. Does that help you? Drive Safe Please!!;-)

I don't know about racers, but 10 and 2 is what driving instructors recommend.

I guess the right way is 2 and 10 but I drive with my thumb and index finger of my left hand at 6. Or my right wrist hanging over the steering wheel at 12. But that's just me, and I've been driving alooooong time. Use 10 and 2 until you get some experience.
