Yes deaf people can drive. It is blind people who should never step behind a wheel. |

yes they do it all the time, you don't have to be able to hear to drive, there's a slightly different test that they take but yes there's a lot of deaf people that drive, and their good drivers also, the reason their good is there more careful than we are, good luck. |

Growing up with deaf parents, hearing people often asked me if my parents could drive. I always thought it was a stupid question... but it does make sense that safety is a concern. A lot of people are just not educated about deaf people.
You might expect a deaf person to be more at risk behind the wheel because they cannot hear things that might alert them to potential danger. The remaining senses of deaf people actually become more sensitive than those of the average hearing person - specifically peripheral vision... they're more "in tune" to what's going on in the environment around them.
I actually once read somewhere that auto insurance industry figures over the past few decades have consistently shown that deaf drivers have fewer accidents than hearing drivers on a per capita basis.
So maybe the better question is... should hearing people drive legally? With cell phone usage, etc., their ability to hear seems to be more of a distraction for them. |

Yes, thats why they dont test your hearing when you go for a license. |

You betcha.
And you know what? I'm glad.
It's at least one person who will never think to say
"I didn't see him". |

Yes. That is why we have street lights, and emergency cars
and trucks with flashing lights. All the deaf people I've known, work for a living. You see all kinds of kids driving with their head phones on, and with the music blasting away, they can't hear properly. And you don't have to worry about a deaf person, using their "cell phone" while driving. <}:-}) |

Legally it's not an issue, but they may cut you off and you can't get the joy of honking at them, that's why I enjoy the flipping of ye old finger. Something everyone who can legally drive may see and enjoy....or be enraged at whichever works. |

Why not? There deaf yes, but they can see! |

i dont think so but i think they should and have some kind of devise that warns them when a police ambulance or firefighter is coming |
|

Yeah they can but they have to be extra careful to make up for it (miss out on cues like honking, police/ambulances etc) or wear hearing aids. If they are completely deaf it's honestly not that safe, unless they're really good drivers to begin with. |

i would think so they just have to be more aware of their surroundings because they cant hear but doesnt make them unable to drive.. |

Yes,
In fact I have a few deaf friends who drive frequently. They are even allowed to drive with the interior light on legally so they can see another signing to them. |

Yes you can legally drive if your deaf.
However its very different because when you are deaf your other senses are boosted in order to compensate. ( you have more visual awareness) |
