I would shift to N if stopping on ice, yes. I would use the handbrake and shift to N in drive thrus while collecting money from others in the car and distributing food, so that your vehicle doesn't roll forward and hit the vehicle ahead.
If driving a manual shift vehicle, many shift to neutral and use the handbrake when stopping in traffic to rest their clutch foot.
The handbrake is merely a manual cable brake attached to the rear brakes (like a bicycle hand brake). Its usually used to prevent rolling on hills, and to prevent your vehicle from damaging the transmission by rolling into P gear which causes the weight of the vehicle to hang on the gear.
I hope that helps you.

You can, but I don't understand why you would want to do that.

You can providing the parking brake is properly adjusted but why?
The vehicle should run just fine in drive with brake pedal pressed at a stop light. The automatic transmission is designed to work that way. If you have a stalling issue, take it to a mechanic.

Friendly Stranger..
Yes. You are able to pull the hand brake while in drive. However what is your reason for doing this? I actually have a friend who does the same thing. He says that he does it to take the strain off of the brake and off of his foot. But you can do this. Its just not that common.

YEA YOU CAN. ITS FINE..
