Can seatbelt cut you in half?

if you are going 140 mph and you crash, and come rapidly to a stop, can the seatbelt cut you in half

Make sure your seatbelt is not twisted or you could suffer major injuries to your internal organs. Also place the lap belt over your hips, not over your stomach.
In newer cars there is an electronic switch in the seatbelt connected to the ABS braking system and this also assists in keeping the driver safer.
Driving at 140 mph is NOT a very safe speed to travel unless you are HARNESSED in WITH PARACHUTE and TIPPING WHEELS on a DRAG STRIP........and you should have some experience before going on a competitive drag strip, right?
I believe DRAG STRIP cars travel at approx. 220 mph by the way IN A STRAIGHT LINE, and some go sideways, some blow apart, they wear fire retardant clothing and helmets.......and they are experienced!
Do I make my point clear?
I wonder how long it would take an old car with lousy brakes to come to a stop at 140 mph........hmmmmmmmm
Oh yes, do airbags come into the picture?
Were you looking straight ahead when you crashed, or were you looking out to the side a a cool car going by?
That would be a very nasty neck injury if you were......
Crashing at 140 mph would probably cause your inner vital organs to slam into your skeleton including your brain inside your skull, and you'd be very lucky to be alive!
Hypothetical question, right? "What if" question, right?

No. Assuming you could find a car that would go 140 that is. |

No, but any collision at speeds that COULD cut someone in half with a seatbelt would probably mash up the person in any case.
You may not be able to avoid some internal injuries caused by the belt, but you will have avoided the internal and external injuries cause by smashing into the interior of the car, the windshield and the pavement outside when your tender flesh came down from it's flight AFTER the collision.
A ruptured kidney and broken rib is a LOT less fatal than a ruptured brain. |

In theory yes, but in practice no. Anyone who has pranged a car will tell you they had seatbelt shaped bruises on their body after the crash. In the old days, motor racing drivers used to not wear seat belts, because they thought ( probably correctly) it was safer to be thrown clear rather than be trapped in a burning car. But that's ancient history now, and in modern cars you really need to have a huuuuuuuge crash to actually hurt yourself. Any accident which took place at 140mph would qualify for that. |

if you crash at 140, without other safety gear, most likely it won't matter anyway. |

It would not cut a person in half, but you would still be dead. .Vehicle going 140 = driver going 140 too. .At impact, the belt locks and the your body want to still keep going. .At that speed, a 175 pound human has over 114,000 ft/lbs of kinetic energy. .Even with airbag deployment, the crushing effect of the seatbelt restraining the body, the chest cavity would most likely be crushed. .The engine would be pushed back into the front seat. .The front seat occupants would most likely be killed on impact. |

Not a chance. What it will do is cause internal injuries or
if you are wearing it improperly and it slips up to your neck it will snap your neck which will kill you instantly. |
