Can someone advise me in driving?

I just got my driving learning permit about a month ago and people say I should be able to driving sort of decent already but so far I'm not doing too well. Today I was driving with my father and I already forgot to shoulder check, and when I made myv right turn today, I hit a car. Is it normal for someone to be like that or is just me.

It is NOT normal to hit a car.

However, the only way to improve one's confidence and driving skill is to get a lot of practice in. It's not how many weeks you've been driving. It's how many hours spent during those weeks.

I suggest that you and your dad go through a safety review before EACH and EVERY driving session. Have him quiz you on rules of the road and safety tips. Just pretend he is your first driving instructor. With enough drills and practice, safe driving techniques become second nature.

Eliminate all the distractions you can. No phones, stereo, unnecessary conversations.

If, after some time, you still don't seem to be improving, you should consider spending some money on a professional driver trainer. This expense will be more than worth it when you consider the expense of insurance premium increases.

Driving is an aquired skill. It is not something you learn how to do overnight. You will learn something new everyday of your life (hopefully).

You may or may not feel comfortable with your father. I know when I was teaching my son how to drive, he was a nervous wreck (no pun intended). You see, I am a certified truck driving instructor and my son felt very nervous because of that fact. I graciously bowed out and let my wife, who is a very good driver, teach him. Once he had the basic skills down, I went with him and showed him little tricks to make life easier (parrallel parking, guaging traffic signals so they would change to green before he had to stop, etc.).

Take your time, don't freak out over your mishap. Your accident was probably caused by your inexperience and the fact that you were trying to do too much at the same time. If your dad was trying to explain something to you, you were listening to him instead of performing your duties driving. When I am instructing, if I have a point to make, I have the student stop the vehicle in a safe place and then I explain what I want to talk about. Then we proceed from there.

Good luck to you. Like someone else said above... Practice, practice, practice. You will never be perfect at it, but strive for greatness! Remember, driving is something that you have to pay attention too, not just go through the motions. Don't get inattentive or lazy in your habits.

stay calm, driving might seem hard at first, but pretty soon it will feel like walking.

Practice, practice, practice.
And always be aware of everything that's going on around you in traffic.
Good luck!

Well like anything else--it takes practice. And confidense. You need to get out there and drive--remember that it is an adult, mature job and you need to drive safely---all those moves they told you will be natural in time. But you need to drive with the right attitude. Relax, smile and good luck.

You are inexperienced. Having your father with you is probably making you nervous. And when you're nervous you make mistakes. Can you have someone else to drive with? Mom, older bro/sis, uncle, aunt? I'll make sure to stay off the sidewalks until you get this driving thing aced. Good luck.

most people wreck their first car...It takes about a year for some people to be completely comfortable with driving and you need to be comfortable to be able to make good decisions.

Accidents happen. However, you are not experienced enough to take full responsibility. I would play driving games on your favorite game console. I like Forza. Set the view like you're inside the car (no looking at the back of the car). It will help you get used to what to expect behind the wheel.
