Can you ask for a continuation for a speeding ticket court date the day of?

I mistakenly read my court date for 10 days after it actually was so I'm in bad shape now that I read it is tomorrow.
The court is closed today and my court date is tomorrow 30 minutes after the court opens, but the court is located 4.5 hours from where I live. Could I call tomorrow when they open and ask for a continuation so that I can do my online traffic school? Or at worst call when they open and pay by phone?

Locksmith, I haven't been carrying it around bragging and had no intention of fighting it. I'm a student and have been very busy with exams, and it simply slipped my mind. I know it was stupid, but I'm looking for someone to answer my question not tell me that, thank you.

I bet dollars to doughnuts that you had a certain number of days to ask for a change. I suggest the docket is set and failure to be there gets a warrant for your arrest. Years back, maybe 1968, I had a court date for 10 am, but thought it was 1pm. I went to the 1pm session, and when I wasn't called I asked the clerk what happened. He told my there was a warrant for me because I wasn't at the 10am session. However, he was able to put me on the 3pm docket, and the judge quashed the warrant because I made an error but still showed up the same day.
I really wouldn't count on being able to change it. What if you call in the morning and they say sorry can't change it? Then you have 30 minutes to get there or be arrested.
You MAY be allowed to just say "guilty" and pay the ticket, but I wouldn't count on that either, because it is already on the docket for a hearing. |
