Can you drive without a right shoe?

The right shoe is still in the car, but just not on your right foot when driving.

It's fine to drive barefoot, regardless of whether your shoe(s) is(are) in the car or not. In spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws against driving barefoot. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops (and other folks who work in traffic, see the answers above) believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity.
Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.
Hi Virgil; I *have* researched California, it's in the list I provided and that info is also backed up by the California members of a barefooters mailing list I'm on. But just to be sure I went back to the California Department of Motor Vehicles and tried to search on barefoot/shoes/footwear/bare and any other key word I could come up with. No such law. Why don't *you* show a link if you're so sure of your case? You can start with my link I've added down below leading to the California DMV Vehicle Code 2007. :-) |

I can't swear about every state, but I've never heard of any state where it's legal to drive without shoes, in California you can even be cited for driving with "Thong" type shoes, it's a safety issue, and it IS illegal to drive without shoes in every state that I know of, hope this helps.

there's no law against that, if you like it that way then you can do it. |

If you take your shoe off, notice how your foot bends - similar to your hand. With a shoe on your foot, there is a stable flat surface to control the brake and accelerator.
You have more control of the car this way.
One of the most common injuries in crashes is a broken ankle. This is due to the impact of your foot and ankle on the brake pedal. Your foot is bent at the ankle and usually breaks at that joint, |
