Find answers to your legal question.

Can you pull an empty U-haul trailer on the interstate?

I have someone coming to move me, but we need to take the moving trailer on the interstate empty. (pulling it behind a van) The U-haul guy said he didnt "recommend" it. But isnt that what they are for? Uhaul website doesnt mention taking one on the interstate empty. (We're saving like $300 if we pull a trailer instead of a moving truck.)

Yes. Provided it is legal and properly hitched to the tow vehicle. Sounds like your U-Haul sales guy was blowing you off or giving you a line because he did not have an answer. A few questions to ask: 1. Tell the salesman what you are hauling and be as exact as possible. Someone there should be versed in legal and load limits and be able to give a precise answer to this question. 2: If possible, show the rep your tow vehicle and ask if this would be a safe tow and how to load the trailer properly. Again he should be able to give you a precise answer to this question. (Also the vehicles owners manual should have a towing guide. This info should also be available from the manufacturer.) 3: Ask for any pamplets or guides he may have available. 4: Safety tips. Ask for them , some things may not be covered by the pamplets. U-haul has a loading guide for thier equipment. 5: see if any of your neihbors are professional drivers. Mostly a professional driver will help you with any questions you have, if only to make sure that no one dies or is seriously injured from a missed hitch lock or the wrong size ball. Double and triple check your connections and make sure your lights are working before you leave the dealership. And check them again every time you stop. I have driven for 9 years(Big rigs). My hitch and lights get checked exery morning and evening and several times during the day every day.

Yes.

But keep in mind, the trailer is meant to be weighed down, so don't make any sudden turns, or it may tip over since there is no real center of gravity.

I THINK IT WOULD BE SAFER TO PULL IT THAN TRY TO PUSH IT. of course it is legal to pull just do not try to out run dale junior,

Yeah you can tow it empty , I've towed an empty car dolly for 2hrs down the interstate before, it did jump around a little but not bad. Is it a 2 axle trailer? If so you'll be fine no big deal.

You can. He probably said it to cover his butt on insurance. So you will be fine. Just stay below 55 mph and you will be fine. Good luck moving.

Leave it up to an inept employee to say something that he knows will only worry you. Then of course he will neglect to explain why he said something like that.

The only reason I can think (and I am by no means an expert) is the wind might be a factor with an empty trailer. Good luck to ya.

It's not recommended because it's too light for highway speeds. It needs to be loaded. It will sway back and forth and skip when you hit a bump.
