Car crashes happen without warning, and at an instant. What are you going to do? Hold on to the overhead hand grip from the time you enter the car until the time you leave? This is not the way to go. Why do you think that the survival rate of drunk drivers who are so relaxed while under the influence of liquor is so high? They are NOT ALL TENSED UP, AND BECOME RIGID.

Nope
Drunks usually survive crashes because they have no idea that its going to happen. Just go loose.

No your can get hurt worst, because you are tensing up your muscle and can be worst.

depend on what type of crash it is

Depends on de-acceleration. If you're going really fast, your organs just keep going within you, ripping arteries off. By 'holding on', you're dampening that rate, very slightly. If you keep your head from hitting the vertical windshield member, holding on will improve your odds.

If it is a planned crash then you may survive.
