I am going to be driving about 1100 miles this weekend. I recently got my car tuned up, my oil changed, and my tires checked. The tread depth on my tires was 5/32. Is this normal or is it an average tread depth? Also do you think it is safe to drive this much with my car in this condition?

Well I think that it was a good idea to get your car checked before you took it out for a long drive. I am a bit concerned about your tread depth. You say that the tread depth when checked was 5/32. New car tires start off with a tread depth of 10/32 to 11/32 of the original tread depth. Now it is important to know when your tires are approaching the worn out state. Tires are officially worn out when you reach the tread depth state of 2/32. You are at 5/32 now. The reason why I am a bit concerned is because you are not that far away from having worn out tires. This means you have used up a considerable amount. Now you still have some usage of your tires left, but the thing that concerns me is that amount of mileage you will be traveling with those tires. You can also do the penny test to check and see if your tires have enough tread depth. If the entire penny head or "Lincoln's head" is visible then the tire is legally worn out. You can try that test, but according to you the tires have been checked.
Now in my opinion, I think that you should be ok for now but I raise the concern because your tires are nearing the end of their life. Just know that you will have to change your tires sooner than later but as it stands its ok. |

That is average about 50 percent worn off but I would be more concerned with the age of the tires.... |

sounds fine really you have done what you should and only you know your car better ...normal would depend on what type or brand of tire 3 is wore out so you still have some left ... if one looks real clsoe there are marker between the treads on most tires that run cross ways of treads id do it... if the tires have no cracks you will be most likely ok should be fine what the tire guy say beside whats left on them did he say you should replace them or if they look old |
