Car wrecks with modern day SUV's?

A guy on the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team died today, rear ending a tow truck with his SUV. It would seem that he would have to be going awfully fast to slam into the truck, with airbags and everything in the SUV. Are SUV's relatively safe to get in an accident in, provided you are travelling the speed limit? Or is it still possible to lose your life in one, with out all the added safety features? Additional Details i meant WITH all the added safety features, not without.

You protect yourself. He may not have even braked. Speed is a primary cause of most collisions. The best solution is for some people to not drive at all. |

yes, SUVs are statistically safer... but only because you have several tons of metal around you, so when you crash, you'll most likely be protected by the huge mass advantage you have, but the person you've crashed into will most likely be killed.
So yea, you can say that you are getting an SUV for safety... just remember, you might kill someone else by saving your own butt in an accident.
For example: Cadillac Escalade vs. Honda Civic. |

No car or SUV is bullet proof or any complete guarantee of surviveability. No matter what, if you are going 50 MPH and stop instantly, you are going to be hurt. Yes, as a general rule SUV's are MUCH safer in an accident against a car, baring roll over. It is simply a matter of heavier mass. I know, drunk hit my wife and two kids in our Suburban head on. They were shook up, but OK He went to hospital where I pressed charges. Destroyed his car..HE was lucky. Still own the Suburban! |

i believe it would be a safe vechile as long as you pay close attension to what is going on around you. don"t be reckless, just be safe and you should"t have any major problem. also carry a cell phone in case of any emergency you may encounter out on any road, this way you can dial911. |

No SUV's are death machines. They always have been and they always will be.
It's simply the nature of the vehicle.
If anybody in government had any testicular fortitude they would have made them illegal ages ago. But they don't. Instead they caved into industry pressure and helped to kill and injure a lot of people in the process.
You know that SUV's are death machines because of all the new technology that must be developed and used to try to make a really badly designed and inherently dangerous machine somewhat less dangerous.
Whatever small benefits that may be derived from having a vehicle with a larger mass and a greater height are immediately negated many times over by the negative effects in handling and braking performance that that extra height and mass brings.
In the blink of an eye all the supposedly positive reasons that people buy SUV's become one huge " Oh S**t!!!" negative.
I can almost guarantee that if anyone sees a vehicle on the side of the road in a wheels up position that vehicle is an SUV.
In time what will happen is that SUV's will evolve back to being safe wide- low center of gravity vehicles - aka station wagons.
EDIT:
Since I'm about to set a personal best record for "thumbs down " despite my telling it like it is, here's something else to think about; Because of their horrible handling and emergency braking properties SUV's are often involved in accidents that injure and kill people BUT DON'T INVOLVE ANOTHER VEHICLE !!!!! and weather is not a factor in.
So bring on the thumbs. |
