Cars: a bad invention or a good one?

Are cars a bad invention or a good one?
sure, they get us around much fatser than on foot, but in the medieval times with the lack of cars everyone were much healthier in that they walked everywhere and this kept them healthy, but cars and other vehicles do not allow for this.
Also with the invention of cars, motorbikes, etc. the amount of deaths from driving carelessly and from road rage is also a problem. Not only this but were also polluting the air with all sorts of gasses.
so are cars a good invention or a bad one?

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a bad invention - only bad application.

Remember back in the day cars were invented people didn't really have any understanding of the effects of toxic gases that would be spewed.

Imagine a world without cars now though - people would be fitter in general, communities would be tighter (it'd require a Lord of the Rings style journey to get anywhere else!) and of course the air would be cleaner. Coming out of Walthamstow (London) a few months ago we sat in traffic for ages, and you could see the smog building up in the air.

Then I remember what my grandad used to tell me - he worked for London Buses and one of his earlier jobs there was to walk with a lamp and guide the buses along the kerb, because they couldn't see it! So... as the number of cars has increased, the air is actually cleaner according to that!

So I'm gonna go with cars being a good invention. We'd not be able to get anywhere too far without them, not with the convenience anyway, assuming trains and planes were invented. I also don't believe they're as polluting as they say, apart from the obvious loss of fossil fuels to run them... but then all we need is some bright spark to invent another long lasting fuel source.

They're a good invention, it's up to us how to use cars. If some people want to drive everywhere and get fat and lose money, thats them. Same way people are complaining about fast food restaurants, if you're not eating there, DONT complain about it!

The answer is so obvious I can't believe all these people pontificating about how evil they are. You want to ride a horse drawn wagon to work? You want to take a covered wagon across country? With the number of humans that occupy the earth NOW as compared to our early history the sheer number of animals neccessary to take the place of the automobile or anything else that runs on the roads or the rails brings into play a whole different type of pollution...know what I mean? I vote the car as a very good invention, hands down!

people also died alot back then for lack of medical attention that they could get to .... there are pros and cons to just about everything make your own mind up but have an open mind

It was meant as a good invention, to help people get around. I don't think that anyone anticipated it would have such bad side effects.
