Cell Phone use in cars illegal?

dont be stupid. dont drive while on the phone unless its an emergency - but still you should pull over to talk.

HOW ABOUT THIS:
I think it is fine to eat, text, watch videos, listen to music, talk to your friends, take pictures, stare at the GPS, take a nap while driving, read the newspaper, drink booze.... anything to distract yourself of the mundane task of safely driving....ummmmm...on second thought....

The difference being that it has been tested many times.

And it is actually 2-3 times more dangerous to be on the phone, than it is to be drunk driving.

That's the bottom line.

Almost every day, someone thinks they have a good argument for it, but there's no getting around the facts.

People in a car, are distracting. But it's a different type of distracting. And it's been proven, that people simply can't talk on the phone, and maintain proper control of their car.

yea or eating or changing a cd. its all bad. plus its too hard for the police to enforce. people need to just pay attention

most people can handle it, but i know some people and see them all the time who are not paying attention and sure enough they are on the phone. they should make it illegal for texting and talking on cell phones. some people ruining it for others but its the smart move.

its evident you have never followed another vehicle where the person driving it was on the cell phone .. everybody handles a vehicle the same when the talk on a cell phone: they can't maintain a steady speed (as a rule, they are well below the speed of the surrounding traffic), they weave in and out of their lane, they change lanes without being sure it is clear to do so, and while they are "paying attention", it is obvious to other operators that they are not

Haha I wrote an essay on this actually, but apparently research has shown that for each person you have in the car, it increases your chances of crashing 100%..but I guess cell phones are worse because you have to actually use one hand to hold it (assuming it's not bluetooth or anything like that) which can reduce your ability to drive as well. Personally, I do use both hands and it's illegal in all provinces in Canada (I think?).

You are right, I think about it as well, you normally see people eating while driving, changing Cds or radio stations, ladies pouting make up on, having kids playing or even singing with them. all that distracts the driver, when are they going to become illegal?

I would have to both agree and disagree.

While both situations are distracting, having someone in the car helps me stay focused on the road. Having them in my vehicle puts their life in my hands and makes me more cautious than I am while talking with someone on the phone.

Your argument is strong, however. Cell phones occupy one of your hands while driving. If this is the logic that state legislators are using for the banishment of cell phones, why aren't drive-thrus illegal? Isn't sipping on your soda or eating that hamburger also occupying the other hand that is supposed to be on the wheel?

It is in my opinion that when states issue a citizen a drivers license they are saying, "We believe that you are both responsible and capable of making decisions behind the wheel." As long as those drivers can drive safely without causing harm to themselves or others, I believe that cell phone use should be allowed.

What you are saying may be true to a certain degree, but there are just too many facts that can and have caused your argument to be false. Here are reasons as to why the use of cellphone's while driving should be illegal:

According to the Human Factors quarterly journal, â€œCell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every yearâ€ (2005). The same study reported that motorists who are engaged in cell phone conversations while driving are less capable than drunk drivers with blood alcohol levels exceeding .08.

Examples of careless driving caused by cell phone use include:

* driving with only one hand on the steering wheel
* taking eyes off the road to reach for a cell phone or dial a number
* failing to keep a proper lookout and to pay attention to surrounding dangers because of distractions caused by the cell phone (this includes being distracted by a passengerâ€™s cell phone use), and
* being distracted by a conversation on a cell phone (according to some studies, being involved in any kind of conversation -- particularly an emotionally charged one -- is enough to distract a driver and cause him or her to drive carelessly).

* The number of crashes and near-crashes linked to dialing is nearly identical to the number associated with talking or listening. Dialing is more dangerous but occurs less often than talking or listening.
* Studies have found that texting while driving causes a 400 percent increase in time spent with eyes off the road.

Wait, but what state are you in? It isn't illegal in Georgia to talk on the phone and drive at the same time.

If your phone has speaker phone just turn it on that and sit it some where near you in the car. That way you have 2 free hands. It would be just like having a conversation in person.
