Cop stopped someone on the road?

has anyone ever heard of this. a cop had someone stopped on a road and i passed him on the lane near him, but wasn't speeding and he came after me and said i had to slow down to 30 if i was gonna pass close to him, or go in the next lane away from him. says its a new law.

mr. pine, the cop did come after me , but i didn't get a ticket as he said its a new law that went into effect.

In Illinois it is the law, its called Scotts Law, you must move over for any emergency, or maintanence vehicle, and its a big fine if you dont. Again this is in Illinois I dont know about other states. And if you must pass in the immediate lane next to the vehicle you must be going 30 or the minimum on the interstate. But if the lane next to you is clear and you dont move over, even if you slow down you'll get pulled over.

Yes, this law was passed in Ohio and many other states due to the amount of accidents where motorists were hitting and grazing officers doing their job, resulting in many deaths and injuries. This law was long overdue, and just makes sense.
I have listened to many truckers on the CB radio laughing and joking because they made a cop jump over guard rails and over cars to avoid being hit by their rigs intentionally seeing how close they could come without actually hitting them.

Amen. And yes, hopefully it's true. A lot of states are finally getting slow down move over laws on the books. Typically they require you move over a lane, or on a 2 lane road where you can't, that you slow down and remain alert. I can't tell you how many near misses I've had trying to work on the side of the road as traffic goes by at 65 per.

yep you must slow down. Now this is for Mike P who responded to your question indirectly about his accidentally going thru a yellow light while following a hummer. Wow, should have been another citation, that means you were possibly tailgating, driving too fast knowing you had seen the light changing and crawled up on the hummer, and it had to be red as I have heard many ppl say the light was yellow, sure it was. slow down and stay far enough behind, don't be a crybaby when you KNOW you are in the wrong by trying to beat the yellow light, it means prepare to stop, not speed u

Firecracker .
It's the law in NH as well.

The Mr. Pine
You are supposed to slow AND change lanes for marked vehicles if you are able to. You are the one it is new to. I have not heard of anyone taking after someone for it.

Chris F
Yep, Slow down or move over is now the law in most areas.

Sparkles
This is true here in Texas.

UNITool
That is correct - an excellent common sense law that finally is on the books in many states.

You DO have to either slow down to 30 or change to the lane to your right. That's the law. You can be fined for that. I don't think it's all that new -- seems like it's been around for several years.
It really SHOULD be encouraged to make police officers direct people OFF the roadway before they stop them.

True. There have been a lot of accidens involving cops hit by a motorist passing them on the side of the road, as they make a traffic stop.

Yes I did hear of that. I live in Washington and I dont know if it's a state law or a federal one, but it's for the safety of the officers.

It is a law, you are supposed to slow down and move over for any stopped vehicle on the shoulder.

regerugged
It may depend on what state you are in. If you were issued a citation. Have a hearing and plead not guilty. The police officer has to produce evidence.

Michael
Yep it is a new law. But I'd take the chance of fighting it if he had someone pulled over ON the road and was creating a potential problem when he didn't need to. If there was a shoulder to the road then he could have had the person to pull off further then you might have a good argument.
But you have to slow down and move away from the cops when they got someone pulled over.

That is true. I actually have been pulled over for not moving over to the right lane when a cop had someone pulled over on the side of the road. That is only when there are 2 lanes, though. I did not hear about the slowing down to 30MPH before, but it makes sense if there is only one lane. Cops are always looking for ways to make their ticket quota for the month.
