I have a 2001 Audi TT, and felt a little rumbling in the tires at the beginning of the winter, so went in to get the tires re-balanced. The company took one look and said "We can't balance these, they are too cupped and scalloped. You should buy new tires, these are unsafe."
Hearing that from a tire salesman made me uncomfortable, as there was no visible problems with the tires, and there is still plenty of tread left. After a few weeks, the fluttering feeling went away, and now, a few months later, things seem to be running very smoothly.
How can I check if there is really a dangerous issue, or if this is just a ploy to get me to spend $1000 on new tires? I live in the city, and only drive on weekends, about 7,000 miles a year.
I do, however, drive on the slightly aggressive side of the spectrum, pushing my car through corners and want to make sure I am not putting myself in too much risk.
Any thoughts on how to tell if it is really time to get new treads?

I think that tyre salesman was trying to sell you a new set of tyres in these days of depression.
If you haven't driven your car for over a month or so and live in a very cold country, the tyres could stiffen a bit putting them slightly out of shape. This is why you could get that rumbling noise.
If you simply tolerate this noise and drive arround for awhile, radial tyres will get back to shape on their own. Driving around at high speeds will build up some heat on the tyres and put the tyres back into shape.
It's a good idea to get the tyres balanced.
There are small bars between the treads of the tyres. If the treads are worn upto those bars it's time to change your tyres.

If all is okay now I would fine another shop just to have them rebalanced for the sake of it as well as they probably need it anyway but I doubt seriously that you need new tires.
The "Abe Lincoln" car tire test is an old one, but it's still the quickest and cheapest way to check the condition of your tires.
Take a penny and stick Honest Abe's head into the groove of your tire. If it sinks in up to his hairline, you're a-ok.
If not, you should consider getting new tires sometime soon. |
