DRIVING IN NJ.. DO YOU ACTUALLY TURN TO LOOK OVER YOUR SHOULDER TO CHECK YOUR BLIND SPOT?
|
My sister is taking her road test and is still on her permit. When I was driving and she was a passenger I was changing lanes and checked my mirrors, then quickly turned to look over my right shoulder to check my blind spot before moving into the right lane. My dad told her you shouldalways use only your mirrors and never turn your head to look behind you while moving. I feel this is the only sure way to "check your blind spot" . . isn't that why it's called a blind spot? Does anyone know what the correct thing to do is? Please let me know .. thanks!

There is no reason to have a blind spot.
Adjust your mirrors people!

And if she does that on her actual drivers test, she won't pass. Do NOT rely on the mirrors, when you pull out you check over your shoulder. You're right, dad is wrong.
Tip #5 - Check Your Blind Spot
June 11th, 2007 By Deveyesh Mistry
This here is something that we all do when we start driving, we always look around to make sure there is nothing there, but as time goes on and we become “seasoned” drivers this is probably something we don’t do as often. Checking your blind spot is a crucial part of driving, especially when changing lanes.
A driver needs to know where their blind spots are in order to accurately check them. A driver’s blind spot is usually at the sides and closer to the rear of the vehicle. These are the areas that you would not see when looking through your side mirrors.
Driver’s need to check these spots in order to ensure there is nothing they may hit (vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist). Also, one should never drive in another person’s blind spot - if that driver does not check their blind spot they may hit you when switching lanes.
Remember to keep a constant check on what is around you - it’s suggested to check your mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds. Checking your blind spot when you are changing lanes will help you keep out of trouble. Keeping out of other driver’s blind spots will help them not hit you! |

Your dad is wrong. You are right. It is in your manual. It will cost her getting her license if she does what dad says. Dad should not have his if he drives like that. A blind spot is exactly as you guessed - a spot that is not covered by the mirrors. Right shoulder or left shoulder. Basically you are looking in the area of the rear wheel of that side. Motorcycles , people, or cars can hidden there. You can do a simple test in a parked car. Have her sit in the car and stand in the area of the rear wheel and tell to look and find you in the mirrors. If you are in the right spot she can't see you. The accident will be her fault.
Thing is too, while you travel on the highway, other cars tend to sit in the blind spot(bad training or a bad habit they got used to without realizing it) Until an accident happens. |

It's good habit to use your mirrors but your dads retarded to tell you to just use your mirrors. Here's a scenario to run by your dad.
Your on a 3 lane hi-way middle lanes clear your in the far left, A cars in the far right. About a half car back from yours. You both decide at the same time to move to the middle lane. Congrats your dad's dumb teachings just helped you run into a car.
If you just use your mirror you would of seen a open middle lane where as if you would of turned to look. You would of seen someone getting over. |

In most stays, the law says to look over your shoulder, and you will flunk the driving test if you don't.

you must always turn your head to do a real live check behind you
like you said, that's why it's called a blind spot, the mirrors won't show it to you |

When i took my drivers test, i got points taken off because i didnt turn my head to look over my shoulder. Dont rely on the mirrors. Objects in the mirror may be closer that appears! Good luck with your test! |

Parents aren't always right, but that may have been the way he had learned to drive all those years ago, so give him a break. If he argues with you, just tell him the rules changed so you don't hurt his feelings.
AND
Continue driving as safely as you do! |

During a road test, you have to look over your shoulder in order not to lose points. |

correct procedures requires u to GLANCE at the rear view mirror, then side, then backside window (blindspot) then change lanes. she probably looked over her shoulders because her driving instructor taught her that. no disrespect but who do u think knows more her instructor or ur dad? During a test if she does not follow the procedure, she will not pass.
when she does pass the driving test she can get one of those things that she could put on her side mirror or rear view that extends to the blindspots. |

Don't look over your shoulder, in NJ or anywhere. If you don't have an auxiliary convex mirror on the right side for checking, wait until you can see the entire front end of the vehicle passed in the inside rearview mirror. Try this: While sitting in your driveway, note the position of the hands on the wheel. Turn your head to the right, be very careful not to move your shoulders and slowly look forward. Note the position of your hands now. Your will see that they have moved slightly to the right due to the shoulder movement while turning the head to the right. Most people don't realize the body movement while turning the head. This body movement will cause the steering wheel to turn slightly to the right. Same goes for turning the head to the left. |
