Defrosting an icy path?

Will ordinary kitchen salt defrost a icy path. I have a shop nearby who sells big jars of it, and wondered if it worked before I bought it.

Yep, good old fashioned cheap table salt. That's what we used to use when I was a child in Yorkshire. Shovel up what you can, don't just sprinkle on a foot of snow |

In the olden days we used to use Kitchen salt
does the job... but rock salt is better
I just thought the modern day was to do nothing and wait for it to melt
try and find a grit bin... and save your cash |

well my bf's dad could not drive onto his drive because of the ice so he went into the kitchen and got some ordinary salt and put that all over the ice.
Then few mins later he was up on that drive so it obviously worked lol. |

Yes it would work very effectively, on your drive or your paths. It does tend to eat into your tarmac or concrete if you use it to often. |

Why would you spend money on a jar when you can just buy a huge bag of rock salt at almost any store for so much cheaper? |

It will but you would normally use rock salt which you can get cheaply in most hardware shops or places like Homebase, Focus, B&Q etc |

Salt (NaCl) will work down to about 20 deg F/ -7C. Below that, calcium chloride or magnesium chloride will work better.
It's actually better to salt before the storm. Then you can sprinkle a little and it will keep the snow and ice from sticking. Afterwards, you can just scrape it off. If you salt after it snows or ices, the snow will dilute the salt as it melts, so you need more. |
