Did I make the right decision in this driving situation?

Okay so earlier tonight I was driving to our high schools basketball game. I was driving down a really icy road and going a little under the speed limit because of that. I approached an intersection, and I had to stop at a stop sign, so I started slowing down. However, the car would not slow down because of the ice, and at the intersection, there was a car coming on the intersecting road! My car still wouldn't stop, and I was afraid of hitting it, so I turned right and slammed into a bank of snow that was up on the curb. I got stuck but after borrowing some random person's shovel from a nearby house, I made it out fine.

Did I make the right decision by turning into the snow?

Deciding to hit an inanimate bank of snow, over hittin an occupied vehicle is ALWAYS the right decision. Failing to try ANYTHING rather than hitting another car would have been the wrong decision.

You did good.

yea you got to do wat u got to do its better than wrecking you car isnt it

JACK OF TRADES
Usually the snow on the side of the road is soft enough not too do damage so good call on that. Even if it did get damaged it's better than possibly hurting someone else or having the expense of your insurance paying for 2 cars or more. SLOW DOWN.

Yes, what's important is nobody got hurt, and nobody came out worse (other than your psyche).

However, if you knew it was a really icy road, why did you go at "just a little under the speed limit"? If police was on the scene, they'd probably have cited you for going faster than prudent based on conditions then.

Just think about that, and considered that a lesson learned with no out-of-pocket expenses. :D

Yes- it's far better than hitting a car.

You're okay, nobody got hurt. That's the main concern.

You probably avoided a bad accident, so I would say it was a good choice. I actually had the very same thing happen to me. I chose the snow bank rather than a head on accident.

You made the right decision but you also need to learn from this mistake or else next time you might not be so lucky.

While you probably did the right thing, you should be looking at why you didn't slow down. Were you just using your brakes hard, or did you try changing down gears. Using your brakes hard would lock up the wheels and give you no traction, changing down would help give the tyres traction and help you slow down. You could also select reverse gear and use a little acceleration, that would slow you down, but you need to be a very good driver to do it well..

That worked for the condition you placed yourself in, but since you knew the roads were icy, you should have been going much slower than "a little under the speed limit because of that". That would have probably kept you from being in a position that you would have had to ditch your car to prevent from sliding into another vehicle.

It is very likely that if a police officer drove by while you were digging your car out of the snow bank, you could have received a citation for driving too fast for conditions.

In short, yes you made the right choice and this shows that you "CAN" handle any situation.
