Do's anyone else think hgv's should be kept off the road during the rush hour?

I think HGV's should be kept off the road full stop, they drive too slowly for the speed of the motorway, cause accidents all the time, overtake one another because one HGV is going half a mile faster than the other HGV so thet clog up the whole motorway causing tailbacks, They are too heavy, causing the majority of physical damage to the UK's Motorway system yet the car users have to pay for all this when our vehicles have a fraction of the emissions, cause a fraction of the damage and car drivers generally do less miles without a rest= less accidents, and lets face it, if you are hit by one of them things, you are dead. It's the Governments fault for not having a workable train system; if the goods were on the trains and the cars had the roads, we wouldn't have half the transport and road problems and fatal accidents we have in the UK..But it will never change because it suits the government to continue to punish the tax payer and not the corporate companies..

no i dont but all those mothers taking their podgy little kids to school cause they cant walk 1/2 a mile without gettin out of breathe should be banned

Cherrypicker
Don't know about that but this I do know. When kids are on school holidays, the journey to work, in the rush hour, is just transformed.

No, I do not agree.
I enjoy going to the shops and buying items of;
food
clothing
furniture
electrical items
carpets
If HGV's were not allowed on the roads during rush hours then how do we get these items to the shops, remember most shops open at 9am they want goods to sell at 9am not
9pm.
Also how would you take delivery of a new sofa etc?
Surely not at midnight or even 3am
Its a known fact, cars travelling to schools cause the rush hours.

josephrob2003
if we did,you would'nt get your store's stacked up,companies would suffer because of late deliveries, beside's it's not really the hgv that's the problem,it's the brainless idiots who drive in the wrong lane(middle lane) when the first lane is empty

Then you would moan when your supermarket runs out of your food that needs shelf re-stocking!

It would not be difficult to place a limit on HGVs during certain time – 7.00am to 7.00pm has been suggested.

But you then need to consider the knock on effect for other workers.

Like many ideas it does not take into account all the other people who would need to work anti social hours, loading, unloading are just two.

Those who suggest such solutions are usually those who would not be required or prepared to do so

Cost of transport and servicing would rise steeply and that would be reflected in the price you pay in shops.

Many of the problems are caused not by HGVs but by those who think they are entitled to have a road free of traffic for their benefit.

You could also consider banning many others from the roads at particular times. Perhaps all BMW drivers on the third Thursday in the month. Ford every second Monday.

A little more tolerance by everyone would do wonders.

Considering that when schools are on holiday the problem quickly disappears all journeys less than two miles would solve things.

Fact - around 60% of school traffic are within walking distance. In most cases it would actually be quicker to walk than drive. And healthier.

Exactly when is the 'rush-hour', can you define it? If you are defining it as the times of the day when workers are going-to or returning-from work then this would possibly cover up to 6 or 7 hours a day in our flexi-time nation. Why pick on HGV's? the vast majority of whom are 'plying a useful trade'. If there are 'culprits' in this situation, it is surely the 'recreational' car drivers who should know better than to take their cars onto the roads at times of high traffic activity. Keeping HGV's off the roads for certain times of the day would be impossible. What are they supposed to do, park-up in lay-bys or on the motorway hard-shoulders? It would just cause more chaos.

The bloody Motorist should be kept of the road and allow us Drivers to get on with our deliveries..

dadseimaj
If you do that are you going to keep cars off the road the rest of the time?

Yet again this topic rears its ugly head!! Get a life!! There are only 2 classes of vehicle which should be on the roads at that time, and they are HGV's & PSV's or buses as they are known. On the M1 around Luton the traffic is fairly light until about 06.00 when the lemmings come out to 'Do The Commute'! WHY?? aren't there any jobs in their home towns? So a 10 minute trip to the M25 takes up to 1 hour. This is repeated all over the country, with 'bottle necks ' created by too many cars. You want the goods in the shops so they have to get there for opening time.
Eddie J,How about YOU finding a night job? No? Is it because of the 'unsociable hours?' but people with your mindset don't mind others doing it.
Fact: When the schools are on holiday, journey times are reduced. & When people are on holiday journey times are reduced.
So what EXACTLY is causing congestion?
OOH!! could it be CARS?
1 person per 14 ft car, so that is 4 cars for every 26 pallet 44 tonne artic .
What about fuel wastage, 4 x 2 litre cars average 28mpg 28 / 4 = 7 mpg ,
1 x 12 litre HGV average 10 mpg ! so the truck is more economical, and needs to be there.
Regarding Helen A's suggestion of putting freight on the railways,. How would you suggest getting goods from the rail-heads ( if they got there in the first place, due to the wrong sort of leaves) to the shops? By shopping trolley?
Replacing HGV's with smaller trucks will not work either, 7.5 tonners only carry 3 tonnes so it will take 9 of them to replace just 1 x 44 tonner with a 27 tonne payload, so more congestion I could go on & on blowing holes in your question , but 'NUFF SAID - FOR NOW!

theres nothing wrong with the hgv drivers i call them the best drivers you can see you should look up to the men and women driven them its a skill and its not easy to drive them . its the idiots who drive there cars and van drivers who dont know how to drive but they think they are the bloody best . car drivers usually the pain in the back because they think they are on a race track i can let you in to a secret hgv drivers have got cheaper car insurance because they are classed as a skilled drivers i am only 23 and got hgv class1 and my car in surance is very cheap got 30% knocked off

ALICE C
Id say everyone else here has covered the most important points your a brainless idiot who hasn't thought through the implications of such a ban and you obviously know nothing of what you talk about so please just shut up before someone shuts you up permanently

just try and go shopping without HGV's delivering goods to the shops if the shops where to use regular vans to deliver their goods then the roads would be even moor clogged up as the delivery companies would restrict the vans to 56mph for the best fuel consumption or 60mph to prevent speeding as vans are legally not allowed to go over 60mph unless they are a car derived van such as the Astra or the escort van then the overall fuel consumption of the deliveries to the shops and such would be even higher so the environmental damage would be even worse all it takes is a little considerate driving on every ones part and we all get where we are going

EDIT

BTW I am a van driver I know I am not the best driver on the road I get treated like **** by most car drivers so I have had to adopt an aggressive driving style to simply get where I am going which is to work I have found the most considerate group of drivers to be HGV drivers the least considerate being taxi drivers and bus drivers BUT there are always exceptions to the rule in 10 years as a road user I have met 2 aggressive HGV drivers who to be honest scared the **** out of me due to the aggressive use of a massive vehicle and I have met only a few considerate taxi and bus drivers
I have been driving a van for a little over a year I am the same driver and have never before in the relatively quiet town live had such a large number of people be aggressive towards me on the roads as in tailgating cutting me up etc so I think I understand the reason why other van drivers and myself now feel we have to drive agresively

UCANTCME
I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT IT IS A 50/50 WITH ME.
